BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore
Maggie Gaughan posted her third career two-goal game with a pair of second-half scores as the Kennesaw State soccer team put together a total team effort in a 4-2 win over Samford on Sunday (Sept. 21) at the Samford Soccer Complex.
"We are delighted," said head coach
Rob King. "We played well in Friday night's game and dominated the game against a good team, but we let down for a brief moment and went a goal behind and were not able to get the result. So we said to the girls this time around we have to have a great performance, but at the end of the day we have got to put some of these teams away. We worked hard and had four goals scored away from home. Samford is a good team. It is always a good game between the two teams. They beat Auburn who was ranked 18th nationally just a week or so ago. I am really pleased with a win and pleased with the performance. I am glad the girls are still keeping the faith because it is hard when you put several losses together and you are a young team, but we are thrilled."
Â
The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead following a controversial call on an Owl foul in the KSU 18-yard box to award the home team a penalty kick as Jermaine Seopeosenwe finished in the 18th minute.
Â
With just under 10 minutes left in the opening half, redshirt-sophomore
Brittney Reed evened the match with her first goal of the season. After controlling a Samford clearance and beating a defender, Reed took a couple of dribbles and fired the ball into the upper left corner of the goal.
Â
Five minutes later, freshman
Marit Sandtroeen registered her second career goal to give the Owls their first lead of the match as redshirt-senior
Alma Gardarsdottir passed to Sandtroeen on the right side of the field. Sandtroeen then dribbled to the left and sent a shot that skimmed the cross bar and in for a 2-1 Owl advantage.
Â
The lead did not last long as two minutes later Sara Smeltzer finished a cross from Malcanisha Kelley into the back of the net to tie up the match at 2-2 with just three minutes remaining in the first.
Â
Out of intermission both teams pushed for the go-ahead goal in the fast-paced match, before Gaughan provided the game-winner with just under 10 minutes left in the second half. The Marietta, Ga., native finished her fourth goal of the season off of a cross from the right flank from freshman
Ashtah Das, giving the freshman her first career point on the assist.
Â
The Owls cemented the victory with a second Gaughan goal with 25 seconds remaining in the contest as the Bulldogs pushed goalkeeper Anna Maddox up the field on a free kick, leaving the goal open. Reed cleared the service to Gaughan, who sent the ball over a retreating Maddox from the half line and into the goal for the 4-2 win. It was Gaughan's team-leading fifth goal of the season and the eighth of her career.
Â
With the win, the Owls remain undefeated at the Samford Soccer Complex after earning the program's first-ever win over the Bulldogs in Birmingham two years ago.
Â
KSU outshot Samford, 17 to eight, with Reed leading the offense with five shots, including two on frame. Sandtroeen added three shots, while Gaughan posted goals on both of her shots.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Olivia Sturdivant made one save in the win, while Maddox totaled two in the loss.
Â
Seoposenw and Taylor Borman each posted a pair of shots for the Bulldogs.
Â
The Owls next open Atlantic Sun Conference action with a trip to Nashville, Tenn., to face Lipscomb on Saturday, Sept. 27 in an 8 p.m. ET match at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
