LONG ISLAND, N.Y. – The Kennesaw State volleyball team won its final match at the Seawolves Invite against St. Francis (NY) (25-12, 22-25, 29-27, 25-21).
"Similar to last weekend, we backed ourselves into a corner in this tournament and had to fight to get out of here with a win," head coach
Keith Schunzel. "The positive news is that we played a good match against Western Michigan, but didn't close the sets when we needed to but overall played at a very high level. Today, we came out very focused in set one, let up in set two and didn't play great in three and four, but we battled through it and came out with the win. Our team needs to continue to learn that every single team we play can beat us, but we can also beat every team we play if we prepare correctly and execute. We have a fun in-state match on Tuesday against Georgia Tech and then we'll be ready for conference play on Saturday."
Freshman libero
Katarina Morton was named to the All-Tournament team after matching her career high in digs with 24 against the Terriers and had 52 digs over the weekend.
Kelly Marcinek capped her strong weekend leading the team with 14 kills. She had 43 kills and 21 digs on the weekend.
Kristi Piedimonte led the way with 25 assists.
Rachel Taylor set a new career high with 10 kills.
When trying to close out the match in the fourth set with the score tied at 17, Taylor got one of her kills and Piedimonte got two service aces to give the Owls a 21-17 lead. KSU closed out the fourth set and won the match on a kill by
Megan McGuinness.
Set three was also close going into overtime after the Terriers spoiled two set points for the Owls. With the score 28-27,
Anaiah Boyer got a kill to give the Owls their second set.
After returning home from Long Island, the Owls have a quick turn around with a match on Tuesday, September 23 against Georgia Tech at 5 p.m. before starting conference play against USC Upstate.
