KENNESAW, Ga. – Despite dominating most of the match against UT Martin, the Owls dropped a tough 1-0 decision to the Skyhawks on Friday night (Sept. 19) at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.

"As I said to the girls after the game it was a great performance," said head coach Rob King. "It was actually our best performance all the way through 90 minutes that we have played this year. We generated a lot of chances. We dominated the game in every statistical category except for the one that counts. We dominated, but made a mistake right at the end of the game. The girl finished it and she is a very good player. She had one chance and finished it well. It was a great game, two good teams and a well-coached team in UT Martin, but I was just pleased with how well we played. We can build on that and take that into Sunday and if we play like that in every game of the conference we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the year."

The Owls (2-6-1) opened the match with an aggressive mindset, winning three corners in the first six minutes of the contest. The pressure from the home team continued throughout the first half, as KSU created chance after chance against the Skyhawk backline.

Late in the first, junior Hannah Churchill had one of the best chances for the Owls, firing a shot from beyond the 18-yard box that was denied by the UTM (5-3-0) cross bar.

Out of intermission, KSU pushed forward for the game-winner as sophomore Cassidy Kemp got behind the UTM defense, but the shot would go just wide. Minutes later, Kemp again came close to a goal as a shot from the top of the box sailed just over the cross bar.

With just under 20 minutes left in the match, UTM's Rianna Jarrett put the visitors up by one as she headed in a cross from Amy Maksimowicz from the right side of the field.

Pressing for the equalizer, the Owls sent multiple services into the final third, but the Skyhawk defense held strong for the victory.

KSU outshot UT Martin, 17 to eight, but only four shots to three shots on frame. Freshman Marit Sandtroeen led the charge with five shots, while Kemp added four for the Owls.

Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Sturdivant collected two saves in the contest, while UTM goalkeeper Mariah Klenke registered four.

Jarrett led the Skyhawks with five shots on the night.

The Owls next head to Birmingham, Ala., for a 3 p.m. ET match against Samford on Sunday, Sept. 21.
