LONG ISLAND, N.Y. – The Kennesaw State volleyball team (5-7) lost to Stony Brook (18-25, 16-25, 19-25) in their Friday night match at Pritchard Gymnasium.
"Tonight, we ran into a buzz saw on the road in Stony Brook," head coach
Keith Schunzel said. "They played focused, intense and very free volleyball all night, and we had zero answers. We lost the serve and pass battle. We lost the attack block battle at the net and flat out got out-competed. A lot of times it's hard for young teams to know how to respond during the match when a team is playing like Stony Brook was, and tonight that showed because we didn't respond. Just like last weekend, we are now in a position where we need to get ready to play and battle to get out of here with a win, and with our preconference season coming to an end it's important for us to get some momentum back heading into our match against Georgia Tech on Tuesday and conference play next weekend."
Kelly Marcinek led the team in kills for the second time today with 13 giving her 29 in the two matches.
Kristi Piedimonte had 29 assists and nine digs.
Katarina Morton led the team in digs with 10.
KSU grabbed an early 2-0 lead against Stony Brook, but the Seawolves responded with a run to push their lead to 9-3. Marcinek kept the Owls in the first set winning six of the first 11 points for the Owls and cut the lead back to three, but that's as close as they got as Stony Brook went on to win it 25-18.
Stony Brook used its momentum from the first set to take another early lead and cruised a 25-16 second set victory.
The third set was similar to the second set with Stony Brook jumping out to another lead. The Owls tried to make a late run to extend the match, but the Seawolves closed it out.
Tomorrow, the Owls will finish the Seawolves Invite Presented by Islandia Marriot Long Island by playing St. Francis (NY) at 2 p.m. before flying back to Kennesaw. Tomorrow's match will be televised as both of today's matches were.
