KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State soccer team ran into a talented Memphis side as the Owls fell to the Tigers, 4-0, on a cloudy Sunday evening (Sept. 14) at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
Â
"It was a big challenge playing against a good team in Memphis," said head coach
Rob King. "They are used to winning their conference and going to the postseason, so we knew it would be a challenge. We gave away an early goal again. The mistakes that we are making, we are making consistently and we need to improve in those areas. The idea of playing a tough schedule like this, is that we are able to learn, but we need to make sure that we are learning so that we do not keep making the same mistakes."
Â
"I was very pleased with a couple of players today," added King. "
Iyani Hughes, who dropped in as an outside back, did well for us. I was also pleased with
Ashtah Das and she had a good performance on Friday as well. There is a lot of learning still going on. We have been making a lot of young team mistakes, but as I said to the group after the match, as long as we are learning from those mistakes then it is going to prepare us for our conference schedule and we are going to be okay."
Â
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead just nine minutes in the match when Valeria Sanderson picked off a back pass to sophomore goalkeeper
Olivia Sturdivant and tucked the ball into the bottom right corner.
Â
Sanderson notched her second score of the game just five minutes later as she took a rebound off of a shot from Nugene Nugent and finished it into the back of the net to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Memphis added a pair of late goals from Sessen Stevens and Alyxandria Stafford in the 71st and 84th minutes, respectively, to seal the 4-0 victory.
Â
KSU fired six shots in the match, with junior
Hannah Churchill and sophomore
Cassidy Kemp each taking two to lead the Owls.
Â
Sturdivant collected a career-high 10 saves in the defeat.
Â
Maryse Bard-Martel registered a pair of saves in earning the shutout victory for the Tigers, who posted 22 shots in the match.
Â
The Owls will next wrap up their three-match homestand with a 7 p.m. match against UT Martin on Friday, Sept. 19, before traveling to Birmingham, Ala., for a 1 p.m. contest at Samford on Sunday, Sept. 21.
