KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback to Furman on a cloudy and rainy Friday night (Sept. 12) at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.

"It was just a very, very poor first-half performance," said head coach Rob King. "We made individual mistakes for the goals. We went a goal down early again and heads went down and the players we anxious to make up for that mistake and they over committed. A couple times again we gave them very easy chances. They played well and finished their chances. We cannot defend like that against a good team and get the kind of result we're looking for. We spoke at halftime and changed it a little bit. We played better in the second half, but it is not the level of performance we need against a good team."

The Paladins (5-1-0) took an early lead in the seventh minute of the match as India Robinson sent in a cross from the left flank to Stephanie Devita, who headed the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Late in the first half, Furman struck again with Carlie Couch dribbling down the right side of the field and into the 18-yard box, before firing a shot past sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Sturdivant and into the bottom left corner. The Paladins added their third goal of the contest just three minutes later on a free kick service from Robinson to Molly Dwyer, who finished into the left side of the goal.

The Owls (2-4-1) posted 11 shots in the match, with sophomore Cassidy Kemp leading KSU with three shots on goal. Sophomore Maggie Gaughan and freshman Aashtah Das added a pair of shots.

Sturdivant made four saves in the contest, while giving up more than one goal in a match for only the first time this season.

Rose Hull and Maddie Grisell each made two saves in split time in goal for the Paladins, who registered 19 shots in the win. Devita led Furman with six shots, including three on frame.

Kennesaw State continues its three-match homestand with Sundae Funday on Sunday, Sept. 14, as the Owls host Memphis at 5 p.m. in Fifth Third Bank Stadium. There will be free ice cream sundaes for the fans prior to the match while supplies last.
