TROY, Ala. – With a pair of goals on a hot and humid Sunday afternoon, sophomore Maggie Gaughan led the Kennesaw State soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over South Alabama in the Owls' final match of the Trojan Classic on Aug. 31 at the Troy Soccer Complex.

It was the Marietta, Ga., native's second two-goal match of her career after scoring a pair against Troy a season ago. She now has three goals on the season and five in her career.

"I could not be more pleased with the team," said head coach Rob King. "We said before that we hopefully were going to win it the easy way and not the hard way by giving up an early goal and unfortunately we gave up an early goal again and we did have to win the hard way. The team showed tremendous fight, tremendous courage and played very well. It was a great team effort and it took everybody to win the game."

Four minutes into the match, the Jaguars drew first blood as Hannah Charde intercepted a pass back to sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Sturdivant and slotted it into the bottom right corner of the goal for the 1-0 advantage.

The Owls responded just eight minutes later on a long free-kick service from senior Alma Gardarsdottir to the top of the 18-yard box. Gaughan ran onto the ball and one-touched it pass USA goalkeeper Courtney Baum to even the score.

As the match moved into the later minutes of the second half, both teams pushed for the game-winning goal. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Gaughan capitalized on a Jaguar misstep as Baum and a USA defender collided at the top of the box to allow the sophomore to steal the ball and pass it into the net for the eventual winner.

The Owls totaled six shots in the match, including five on goal. Gaughan led the way with three shots, while freshman Marit Sandtroeen, redshirt-sophomore Danielle Gray and senior Julia Nelson also tallied shots.

Sturdivant collected five saves in the win.

USA registered 19 shots, but only six on frame, while Baum grabbed three saves in the loss.

KSU continues tournament play next weekend with a trip to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for the Blue Raider Classic, hosted by Middle Tennessee on Sept. 5-7. The Owls will battle Austin Peay on Friday (Sept. 5) at 5 p.m. ET, before facing South Florida on Sunday (Sept. 7) at 2 p.m.
