TROY, Ala. – Despite holding much of the second-half possession, the Kennesaw State soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Troy on a hot and humid Friday afternoon (Aug. 29) in the Owls' first match of the Trojan Classic at the Troy Soccer Complex.
Â
"We dug ourselves a hole by going a goal down five minutes into the game," said head coach
Rob King. "We were slow starting and then we had to work really hard to try and get back into the game. Second half, I thought our work rate was terrific, but our actual product was not quite good enough on the field. We have to look at ourselves and see what it is we can do better individually and talk to our teammates and see what we can do collectively. The beauty of college soccer is that we have another game on Sunday to turn it around. We will be practicing in the morning. We will try to make it better than it was today and it is a fresh game Sunday that we want to come out and win. That is the focus."
Â
The Trojans took an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute after a scramble in the six-yard box saw sophomore goalkeeper
Olivia Sturdivant turn away a shot from Annabell Simpson, before Alissa Jones finished the rebound into the back of the net.
Â
Following the intermission break, the Owls picked up the pressure on the Troy backline and pushed forward for the equalizer, but the Trojans did not break in securing the win.
Â
KSU registered six shots in the contest, with freshman
Marit Sandtroeen, seniors
Julia Nelson and
Iyani Hughes and sophomores
Maggie Gaughan,
Shannon Driscoll and
Danielle Gray each posting a shot in the setback.
Â
Sophomore
Olivia Sturdivant collected five saves in the match.
Â
The Trojans notched 10 shots in the game, while goalkeeper Mikki Lewis did no record a save.
Â
Kennesaw State returns to action on Sunday (Aug. 31) in its final match of the Trojan Classic, facing South Alabama at 1 p.m. ET at the Troy Soccer Complex.
