KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State soccer team aimed to entertain its fans in its second exhibition match of the season and the Owls did not disappoint with a 6-1 rout of Clayton State at Fifth Third Bank Stadium on Friday (Aug. 15) night.
Â
"These types of games we want to see that they are learning what we're teaching them," said head coach
Rob King. "We saw a lot of good movement. I liked the shape and I liked the tempo of the game. We got a little bit tired in the second half and it got sloppy. We lost track of exactly what we were working on, so that was a little disappointing. Having said that, first home game, six goals scored. Overall, I am very pleased where the girls are."
Â
The Owls did not waste any time in taking control of the match as freshman
Marit Sandtroeen continued her strong play with her second exhibition goal of the preseason in the 10th minute. After receiving the ball on a cross from redshirt-sophomore
Brittney Reed, Sandtroeen slipped past Laker goalkeeper Charlotte McCormack for an open net goal.
Â
Following a Clayton State own goal in the 12th minute, freshman
Khatra Mahdi put the Owls up 3-0 on her first exhibition goal in the 31st minute as Reed beat her defender to the end line and delivered a ball to Mahdi's feet. The Brampton, Ontario native then finished into the back of the net.
Â
KSU continued its offensive push in the second half as sophomores
Cassidy Kemp and
Maggie Gaughan and freshman
Ava Scott-Moncrieff each notched a second-period goal in the victory.
Â
CSU's Lois Edvardsson added a score for the Lakers in the 71st minute as KSU went on for the commanding 6-1 win.
Â
The Owls peppered the CSU goalkeepers with 22 shots, including 10 on frame, while the Lakers were held to five shots in the match. Gaughan led KSU with four shots, while Sandtroeen and Reed notched three shots each.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Catherine McDuff started the match and recorded one save in the first half, with freshman
Mady Carter taking over in the second half and registering two saves.
