BOX SCORE (XML) | BOX SCORE (PDF) SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It was a solid debut for the Kennesaw State soccer team as the Owls got revenge against Wofford with a 1-0 win on a rainy Sunday (Aug. 10) evening at Snyder Field in the team's first exhibition of the season. In her first game as a collegiate player, freshman
Marit Sandtroeen scored the game winner in the 67th minute of the match.
"Overall we were very pleased," said head coach
Rob King. "The first period was a little rough and not quite as composed as we wanted, but the longer the game went on the better we got, which was what we were hoping for. We began to develop an understanding of the system, which is great. We were able to play everyone and the freshmen played a lot of minutes, which is really good. Overall we were very pleased and it is always good to start off with a win."
Following a first half which saw both teams ease their way into the match, the Owls worked to build possession in the second 30 minutes of play. Early in the period, KSU developed one of the game's best opportunities as sophomore
Maggie Gaughan crossed the ball to
Cassidy Kemp, whose shot was saved by Terriers goalkeeper Kara Boggs.
The Owls continued to control the match in the third period, before taking a 1-0 lead with a goal from Sandtroeen in the third period. Following a long ball down the field from freshman
Mali Kokvoll, the Tynset, Norway native stole the ball from Boggs for the easy pass into the back of the net.
KSU outshot Wofford 12 to three, including 11 shots in the final two periods. Sandtroeen, senior
Nicole Calder and sophomore
Cassidy Kemp led the Owls with two shots each, with Sandtroeen and Kemp registering both of their shots on frame.
All three Kennesaw State goalkeepers saw action in the exhibition, with sophomore
Olivia Sturdivant starting and playing the first period, freshman
Catherine McDuff playing in the second and freshman
Mady Carter finishing the game for the Owls. Both Sturdivant and Carter recorded one save in the victory.
Kennesaw State returns home for the final two exhibition matches of the season as the Owls host Clayton State on Friday, Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. ET and Middle Tennessee State on Sunday, Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
