SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
David Durham and
Alex Pena combined to post a win at No. 3 doubles to highlight the Kennesaw State men's tennis team's 7-0 loss to USC Upstate Saturday in an Atlantic Sun Conference match at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Owls entered the match with an opportunity to clinch a berth in the six-team A-Sun Conference Championship but was unable to post the victory. Under first-year head coach
Eduardo Rincon, Kennesaw State concludes the 2014 season with an 8-11 overall record and a 2-6 mark in conference play.
Despite Durham and Pena's win, the Owls lost the doubles points as USC Upstate (9-12, 4-4) record victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
In singles play, Durham and
Simon Pritchard both extended their opponents to a tie-breaker set before falling. Durham suffered a 6-0, 6-7, 10-6 setback to Rajanvir Dharni at the No. 5 position, while Pritchard fell 6-4, 5-7, 13-11 to Matthias Kidler at No. 1 singles.
Under Rincon's leadership, Kennesaw State's season was highlighted by a Division I school-record five-match winning streak.
"Unfortunately, we were unable to get that one victory that would have put us into the A-Sun Conference Championship," Rincon said. "Despite the disappointment of falling short of our goal, the team made significant strides this year and, with the entire group returning next year, we are looking forward to the future. We know what we need to work on to get better and will spend the summer working on those things."
