KENNESAW, Ga. – It was a bittersweet day as the Kennesaw State women's basketball team honored redshirt-senior
Lisa Capellan and former Owl
Chelcey Farrar on Senior Day 2014, but ultimately fell to rival Mercer, 74-53, in the home finale on Saturday afternoon (March 1) at the KSU Convocation Center.
Â
Junior guard
Kristina Wells also became the third player in the KSU record books and the 103rd all-time in the Atlantic Sun Conference to reach the 1,000 point plateau after putting in a pair of free throws with 3:45 left in the first half and finished the game with seven points.
Â
With the loss, the Owls (6-21, 4-12) sit in seventh place in the league heading into the final week of play in the regular season, while the Bears (15-12, 8-8) move into fourth place in the league standings.
Â
The Owls never led in the contest as Mercer jumped out to an early 11-2 lead four minutes into the contest, but a 10-4 KSU run, finished off by a three-pointer from junior guard
Bria Young, brought the home team within 15-12 with 12:53 left in the first.
Â
The Bears then scored the next six points to move their lead back to 23-12 with nine and a half minutes remaining. After freshman forward
Aareon Smith converted three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt to cut the lead to six, Mercer again pushed the lead by to double digits at 29-19.
Â
A 7-2 run from the Owls, sparked by Wells' first two points of the game from the charity stripe, closed the gap to five at 31-26 with just under two minutes left in the half.
Â
Back-to-back layups from the Bears before a pair of Wells free throws then sent the game into intermission with Mercer leading 35-28.
Â
Out of the break, back-to-back layups from freshman
Gratia Brooks pulled the Owls to within three at 35-32 just two minutes into the second period.
Â
The Bears responded with a 9-2 run to take a 45-34 margin with 15 minutes remaining.
Â
KSU twice would cut the lead to six, but a 12-2 Mercer run over the next six minutes killed the Owl momentum as the Bears went on for the 74-53 win.
Â
Brooks led the way for the Owls with 11 points and a 5-of-9 performance from the field, while Young and freshman guard
Deandrea Sawyers also hit double figures with 10 each in the game.
Â
The Owls were paced on the boards by Wells with 13, while Capellan pulled down 10 rebounds and poured in six points and three assists in her final game at the KSU Convocation Center.
Â
KSU committed only 12 turnovers in the contest, but the Bears capitalized with 11 points off turnovers and 16 second-chance points after winning the battle of the boards by three, 42-39.
Â
Precious Bridges turned in a game-high 23 points for the Bears, while Kendra Grant added 19.
Â
The Owls next head to Jacksonville, Fla., for the final weekend of the regular season as KSU takes on Jacksonville on Thursday, March 6 at 7 p.m., before the season finale at North Florida on Saturday, March 8 at 1 p.m.
