DELAND, Fla. – Freshman guard
Deandrea Sawyers posted her seventh 20-point game of the season, but it was not enough as the Kennesaw State women's basketball team snapped a two-game win streak in a 87-57 setback to Stetson on Thursday night (Feb. 13) at the Edmunds Center.
Â
"Tonight we did not play for 40 minutes," said head coach
Nitra Perry. "We are at a different phase, trying to learn how to sustain winning and what that looks like. It is a learning process. You know that there is going to be bumps in the road, but we are going to just keep going and keep learning and building from each win and loss."
Â
Sawyers scored a game-high 21 points, including three three-pointers, to go along with six rebounds and four assists for the Owls (6-17, 4-8).
Â
It was a competitive first five minutes as neither team was able to take command with the score knotted at 6-6, the third tie of the game.
Â
The Hatters (19-5, 11-1) sprinted ahead by eight at 19-11 with eight minutes remaining, but the Owls closed within 19-17 with a three-pointer from junior guard
Kristina Wells and a traditional three-point play from junior guard
Bria Young.
Â
Stetson again charged ahead with eight-straight points for its largest lead of the half, but back-to-back threes from Sawyers and Young cut the Hatter lead to 27-23 with 3:21 left in the first. The Hatters then scored the final six points of the half for a 33-23 advantage at the break.
Â
The Hatters opened the second half where they ended the first, putting in the first 10 points of the period to build a 43-23 lead before a pair of Wells free ended the home team's run.
Â
The Owls brought it down to 18 after four-straight points from Wells and freshman forward
Aareon Smith, but a 15-5 run over the course of the next six and a half minutes sent the Hatters to a 62-34 margin.
Â
KSU twice trimmed the lead down to 25, but would not get any closer as Stetson went on for the 87-57 victory.
Â
Young poured in 13 points and three three-pointers for the second-consecutive game. It was her third-straight contest in double figures.
Â
The Owls won the battle of the glass, 35-32 and only allowed six Hatter offensive rebounds, while collecting 14 offensive boards for 12 second-chance points. Wells led the way with eight rebounds in the contest.
Â
Despite the rebounding win, KSU was hampered by 19 turnovers, which Stetson capitalized on for 24 points.
Â
The Hatters registered five players in double figures, led by 16 points from Sasha Sims.
Â
KSU continues its Sunshine State trip as the Owls travel to Fort Myers, Fla., to take on defending A-Sun regular season champion Florida Gulf Coast in a Saturday night affair on Feb. 15. Tip is set 7:03 p.m. ET in Alico Arena and can be seen on the ESPN3 network.
