HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Kennesaw State soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback to Northern Kentucky on a cold and rainy Saturday night (Oct. 18) at NKU Stadium.
Â
"Tonight was disappointing," said head coach
Rob King. "Once again we dominated a game in terms of possession, shots, shots on goal and corners, but failed to score. I give credit to Northern Kentucky, who scored with their only shot on goal. We will regroup and focus on our home Senior Night game against USC Upstate on Friday."
Â
The Owls (5-10-1, 2-4) controlled much of the possession throughout the match and held an 8-4 advantage in shots at halftime after keeping NKU (6-7-3, 2-3-1) on the defensive throughout the first 45 minutes of play.
Â
Out of intermission, KSU continued to hold the ball, but could not find the back of the net.
Â
The Norse would break the scoreless tie with just over 15 minute remaining in the match as Jessica Frey headed the ball into the upper right corner of the goal off a corner kick from Sami Rutowski in the 74th minute.
KSU pushed forward for the equalizer in the final minutes of the contest, but NKU would hold the Owls at bay and go on for the 1-0 victory.
Â
The Owls outshot the Norse, 15-7, including a 5-1 mark in shots on goal as sophomores
Maggie Gaughan and
Shannon Driscoll led the offense with three shots each.
Â
Sophomore
Olivia Sturdivant played all 90 minutes in goal for the Owls and did not record a save in the loss.
Â
NKU goalkeeper Brooke Schocker collected five saves on the day, while Macy Hamblin posted three shots for the Norse.
Â
Kennesaw State will conclude its 2014 regular season next Friday (Oct. 24) as the Owls celebrate Senior Night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium against USC Upstate at 7 p.m. ET. Seniors
Alma Gardarsdottir,
Nicole Calder,
Julia Nelson and
