KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State volleyball team (8-11, 2-3) lost a very intense four-set match (27-29, 17-25, 26-24, 26-28) that saw three of the sets go into overtime to Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday night to cap homecoming weekend.
Â
"We responded well at times," head coach
Keith Schunzel said. "I think we came out really well. Gulf Coast was making some errors and we built a lead and then we didn't close out set one. That was tough and then we played a pretty poor set two, maybe the worst we played all weekend. I was happy with the way we initially came out. I thought we were focused and playing free, but then you get down in an 0-2 hole and it doesn't matter who you're playing, it's hard to come back. We sure fought and tried, but we just couldn't pull out the fourth and push it to a fifth."
Â
Anaiah Boyer got the second double-double of her career finishing the match with 16 kills and 10 digs.
Â
Cierra Royster stepped up and had 10 blocks with eight kills.
Â
Kristi Piedimonte finished the match with 40 assists and five kills while Katarina Morton led the team with 23 digs.
Â
In the first set, the Owls built a big lead, but the Eagles went on a run to clinch the set in overtime 29-27.
Â
FGCU carried over their momentum into the second set and went up 2-0 in sets as the teams went to the locker room.
Â
The third set, the Owls were not going to make it easy as they came out and built a lead forcing FGCU to burn their timeouts early. Once again, the set went to overtime when Boyer and Royster each got kills to push the match to a fourth set.
Â
The Owls had three chances in the fourth set to even the match at two sets apiece, but the Eagles spoiled them and ended up winning the match clinching set 28-26.
Â
Next weekend, KSU will be back on the road as they head to Jacksonville to take on North Florida next Friday, October 18 and Jacksonville on Saturday, October 19.
