HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Kennesaw State women's basketball team snapped its two-game Atlantic Sun Conference win streak as the Owls fell to Northern Kentucky, 79-51, on Saturday night (Jan 11.) at The Bank of Kentucky Center.
Â
KSU falls to 4-11 on the season and 2-2 in conference play, while the Norse moved to 8-7 on the year, while keeping their league record unblemished at 4-0.
Â
For the third-straight game, freshman guard
Deandrea Sawyers led the Owls with 17 points, including four three-pointers.
Â
It was a slow start for the Owls as the Norse jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, before junior guard
Bria Young scored six straight on her own to pull KSU to within one at the 15:42 mark in the first.
Â
After a Sawyers three-pointer, NKU against sprinted ahead for its largest lead of the half at 20-11. KSU continued to claw back as back-to-back treys from Sawyers, followed by a Young jumper cut the Norse lead to one at 20-19 with 4:26 on the clock.
Â
NKU then scored the next five points, before Young put in a layup with 27 seconds remaining to send the Owls into intermission down 25-21. Â
Â
Out of the break, KSU used layups from freshman forward
Gratia Brooks and junior guard
Kristina Wells to again move to within one at 26-25, but after shooting over 26 percent in the first NKU responded with a 27-7 run over the next eight minutes. The Norse finished the half with a 67 percent clip from the field.
Â
Despite the deficit, the Owls pressured NKU into 21 trips to the free-throw line, converting 13 of them, but the effort would not be enough as the Norse went on for the 79-51 victory.
Â
Young posted her fifth-straight double-figure game with 11 points, while redshirt-senior
Lisa Capellan registered 10 points, going 3-of-4 from the field and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. She added a team-best six rebounds, while Wells and freshman forward
Chloe Branch totaled five. Along with her five boards, Wells handed out five assists and notched a pair of blocks.
Â
The Norse put three players in double-figures, led by 22 points from Melody Doss, while also picking up 21 points off 19 KSU turnovers.
Â
The Owls next return to the friendly confines of the KSU Convocation Center for a date with 2013 A-Sun regular season champion Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday, Jan. 16. Tip is set for 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN3.
