ATLANTA – After dropping a heartbreaking match to Georgia State a season ago, the Kennesaw State soccer team was determined to return the favor to the Panthers and did so in dramatic fashion as junior
Nicole Calder scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in the match to give the Owls (2-3-0) a 1-0 win over Georgia State (0-2-1) at the GSU Soccer Complex on Friday, Sept. 6.
After back-and-forth play in a scoreless opening half of play, the Owls looked to up the pressure in the second half.
With the match inching closer to overtime, Kennesaw State pushed for the breakthrough goal. That goal would come in the 86th minute when the Owls earned their last corner kick of the match. After serving in the corner kick, redshirt-junior
Jewelia Strickland received the ball again from sophomore
Elizabeth Johnson on a rebound from the service. Strickland, situated on the right flank, sent the ball back into the box where Calder hammered it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season and the game-winner.
It was Calder's first appearance in 2013 after sitting out the first four games due to injury.
Georgia State outshot KSU 13 to 12, but the Owls peppered nine shots on goal, while holding the Panthers to only three shots on frame. Freshman
Maggie Gaughan led the way for the Owls with four shots, all coming on frame. Whitney Ravan tallied three shots for the Panthers.
KSU earned three corners in the win, while Georgia State earned six.
Freshman goalkeeper
Olivia Sturdivant continued her strong play in goal, posting three saves while securing her second shutout of the season. Brie Haynes totaled eight saves for GSU.
The Owls return to Kennesaw for their home-opener at Fifth Third Bank Stadium on Friday, Sept. 13, facing Southeastern Conference (SEC) opponent Mississippi at 7 p.m. (ET).
