OXFORD, Miss. – The Kennesaw State volleyball team started off its run in the Ole Miss Magnolia Invitational with a straight set loss, 3-0, (25-16, 25-10, 25-18) to the host team Rebels on Friday morning in the Gillom Sports Center.
Â
The Owls fall to 1-3 on the year after suffering the loss on the road despite a trio of stellar performances from
Keyaira Stevenson,
Cierra Royster and
Toure Hopkins during the match. Stevenson was tops for the KSU offense with seven kills while Royster and Hopkins each came up with four blocks for the Owls.
Â
Despite a last-minute run by the Owls in the first set with back-to-back blocks from
Cierra Royster, the Rebels took the opening sequence 25-16. Down 23-19 late in the set, the Owls clipped off four straight points on Ole Miss with a pair of attack errors by the home team and the two block by Royster before the Rebels closed out the set on a kill.
Â
It was another quick start for the home team in the second set as the Rebels lunged out to the 10-4 advantage. Ole Miss would never relinquish the lead as the Rebels took a 25-10 set win to go up 2-0 in the match.
Â
The Owls kept things interesting in the third, climbing back from a 6-1 deficit to come within two points of the Rebels at 7-5 after a service ace from sophomore
Jenna Wilt. But a 5-0 run from the home team helped pull Ole Miss ahead as the Rebels took the match with a 25-18 third set win.
Â
Sara Metroka ended the match with 17 assists and eight digs, as did libero
Camille Pedraza.
Â
The Owls will be back on the floor later today as they face off against Arkansas State at 6:00 p.m. ET.
