Kennesaw, Ga. – Redshirt junior
Jewelia Strickland collected a pair of assists off two corner kicks to help the Kennesaw State soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Lipscomb in both teams' Atlantic Sun Conference opener on Friday, Sept. 27 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
After an entertaining opening 15 minutes, freshman forward
Shannon Driscoll scored her first collegiate goal off of a corner from Strickland in the 18th minute. The ball came right to Driscoll in front of the net and she capitalized by heading it past Lipscomb goalkeeper Anna Buhigas and into the left corner of the net.
The Bisons (3-5-2, 0-1-1) answered back in the 27th minute when Ellen Lundy connected on a through ball to Caroline Chadwell, who slotted the ball past freshman goalkeeper
Olivia Sturdivant to knot the score at 1-1.
Kennesaw State (4-5-0, 1-0-0) broke the 1-1 tie in the 61st minute when Strickland curled in another great corner kick to junior defender
Nicole Calder, who headed in the decisive goal to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.
After taking the lead, Kennesaw State put forth an aggressive defensive effort to help preserve the win.
KSU outshot the Bisons 11-9, with five shots on goal to Lipscomb's one.
Both teams earned three corner kicks a piece and combined for five fouls. The Owls' defense caught the Lipscomb forwards offside eight times in the match.
Kennesaw State will look to go to 2-0 in conference play when it closes out a five-match home stand when it hosts Northern Kentucky at Fifth Third Bank Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 29 beginning at 1 p.m. (ET).
