KENNESAW, Ga. – It was another home court win for the Kennesaw State volleyball team, this time with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-16) trouncing of USC Upstate in the first Atlantic Sun Conference match of the season, putting the Owls at 1-0 on the year in the league standings.
Â
The Owls now move to 6-5 on the year and remain undefeated at the KSU Convocation Center at 5-0 after the Friday night win over the Spartans, who now sit at 0-9 on the year.
Â
"It was good win," said Kennesaw State head coach
Keith Schunzel. "The team came out and was focused and we put together a nice, consistent effort which is always tough to do in conference. I thought our team did a good job of sustaining a high level of play throughout the match and our defensive intensity was there as well."
Â
KSU held Upstate to a .000 hitting percentage, the lowest the Owls have held any team to this season, while hitting .248 through the match.
Keyaira Stevenson and
Toure Hopkins were the offensive forces for Schunzel as the two combined for 17 kills with Stevenson compiling a .562 attack percentage and Hopkins hitting .407.
Â
The first set held close in the early goings until a 5-0 run from the Owls put the home team out front, 16-10 after three straight attack errors from the Spartans.
Sara Metroka and
Megan McGuinnes ended the match at 25-14 with a block to give KSU the 1-0 match lead.
Â
KSU had no trouble in the second set as Upstate hit -.025 through the tilt with Hopkins slamming four kills as the Owls took another 25-14 set win before taking the third and final set, 25-16 with another Spartan error handing the Owls their fifth straight win.
Â
Camille Pedraza was the anchor on defense for the Owls once again, coming up with 19 digs while freshman
Fanise Cannon was good for 11. Metroka earned four blocks on the defensive end to go with her 33 assists on offense.
Â
The Owls will be back in action on Saturday afternoon with a 3 p.m. ET contest against 2012 A-Sun Tournament Champ East Tennessee State.
