KENNESAW, Ga. – The Owls men's tennis team wrapped up its weekend tournament at USC Upstate on Sunday (Sept. 15). The tournament proved to be a stiff competition for the team but the players improved each day.
In singles draw, freshman Simon Pritchard fell to Presbyterian's Ryan Miller. Pritchard then made a big statement by winning two tough matches in the singles back draw A against Wofford's Trevor Gotkowski with a 7-6, 6-2 score against his own teammate, sophomore Tobi Menhofer in a 6-7, 6-4, 10-6 win.
Sophomore Maksim Yorsh also pulled out wins in the singles back draw A against Presbyterian's Gonzalo Asis with a 7-5, 6-1 win and Furman's Joel Cook with a 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 win. Also in singles back draw A, freshman David Durham was defeated by Wofford's Graham Duncan, 7-5, 3-6, 10-3. Junior Alex Pena fell 6-3, 6-1 to Wofford's Park Thompson.
The doubles team of Yorsh and Pena competed to win in doubles action on Saturday. The duo pulled out an 8-1 win against Wofford's McClain Culver and Patrick Longest. Yorsh and Pena then went on to beat Wofford players Walker Heffron and Jackson Keith with an 8-5 score. Pritchard and Durham fell to Presbyterian duo Joel Roberts and Rafael Berghaus, 8-6. Menhofer and junior Louis Theodor also lost in doubles draw A to Furman tandem Joel Cook and Jacob Behal (8-5) and junior Matthew Johnson and freshman Jake Bouchillon fell to Presbyterian's P.H. Broyhill and Nathan Crocker in the first round.
Doubles back draw A was a success on Saturday, with players Menhofer and Theodore pulling out an 8-3 win over Presbyterian. Johnson and Bouchillon posted an 8-5 victory over USC Upstate players Pedro Carvalho and Rajanuir Dharni in doubles back draw B.
The Owls concluded the weekend with wins on Sunday (Sept. 15). Pritchard proved himself once again in a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Yorsh in the singles back draw A final match. Duo Yorsh and Pena locked in a 9-7 win over Wofford's Park Thompson and David Sklar in the doubles draw B bracket. Menhofer and Theodore were victorious over USC Upstate duo Yvon Haessig and Gonzalo Blanco in the double's back draw A while Johnson and Bouchillon finished out doubles back draw B with an 8-6 win over Presbyterian.
"We learned valuable lessons this weekend," said head coach Eduardo Rincon. "This tournament has been very productive for us and we are looking forward to going back to practice and applying what we have learned here. Overall I feel like we made a lot of progress each day."
The KSU men's tennis team will hit the road again on Friday, Oct. 4 when it begins play in the Georgia Southern Invitation in Statesboro, Ga. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 6. Recaps of the tournament will be available at KSUOwls.com.
