KENNESAW, Ga. – It was a productive outing for the Kennesaw State volleyball team during the opening day of the 2013 Owls Invitational as KSU went off for back-to-back wins, defeating Tennessee Tech 3-2 in the morning tilt before coming out and taking down Stony Brook in the night cap, 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 26-26).
Â
KSU improves its overall record to 3-5 on the year after the two wins, the first two on its home floor at the KSU Convocation Center this season.
Â
During the win over the Seawolves (3-7), KSU earned 51 team kills, 13 alone from freshman
Kelly Marcinek and nine each from
Cierra Royster and
Keyaira Stevenson with 32 assists by
Sara Metroka.
Â
The Owls hit a match-best .303 during the opening set, taking the 25-19 win to go up 1-0 in the contest before taking a much closer second set, 25-23.
Â
Stony Brook took its lone set win of the night during the third, but not without dramatics as the Owls rattled off a 5-1 run late in the set to cut the Stony Brook lead down to just two points. But the Seawolves persevered, taking the 25-22 win.
Â
After falling behind 1-0 in the fourth, the Owls took two straight points to take the lead for good on a SBU attack error along with a
Keyaira Stevenson kill to set the score at 2-1 KSU. Senior
Sara Metroka then put it away in extra points on a kill to give KSU the 26-24 fourth set win.
Â
Defensively, libero
Camille Pedraza came up with a match-high 25 digs while
Megan McGuinness, Stevenson and Royster each put up a pair of blocks as the Owls held Stony Brook to just a .176 attack percentage.
Â
Pedraza was also good for three service aces during the win.
Â
The Owls are back on the floor tomorrow as they play host to Coastal Carolina at noon ET and Samford at 7:30 p.m. ET to wrap up the weekend.
