KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Kennesaw State soccer team opened the 2013 season with a 1-0 win over Tennessee Tech in a neutral-site match at Regal Soccer Stadium on the campus of the University of Tennessee on Friday. It was the Owls first season-opening win since 2010.

“Obviously it is nice to start with a win,” said head coach Rob King. “Overall, we played well. We generated a lot of chances. I think we ended up with 15 shots and some of them were very good chances. Overall I thought our performance was good. We need to control the game a little better when we are winning. The girls worked very hard, we got a lot of players in the game and it was nice for our keeper to get a clean sheet.”

Despite outshooting the Golden Eagles 10 to two in the opening half, KSU could not capitalize on its scoring opportunities and entered halftime in a scoreless tie.

Redshirt-freshman Brittney Reed broke the tie 10 minutes into the second half with a bullet to the lower left corner of the goal from 25 yards out to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

The Kennesaw State defense held strong in the final minutes of the contest to secure the first victory of the season.

KSU outshot TTU, 15 to four, with eight shots coming on frame. Freshman Suzanne Arafa led the Owls with four shots, while Reed took three shots, including two on goal. KSU earned seven corners in the match, while holding the Golden Eagles without a corner.

Freshman Oliva Sturdivant made one save to pick up her first win in the Black and Gold. TTU goalkeeper Jordan Brown notched seven saves in the loss.

Kennesaw State continues its weekend in Knoxville with a match against Big 12 opponent Oklahoma on Sunday, Aug. 25. Kickoff for the neutral-site contest is set for noon.
