Owls Softball Wraps Non-Conference Action with a Trio of Midweek Games

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State softball team will take a break from Atlantic Sun Conference action for a trio of midweek games as the Owls head to Atlanta, Ga., for a single game against Georgia Tech on Wednesday, April 24 at 6 p.m. (ET). KSU then returns to Bailey Park for its final two regular season home games on Thursday, April 25 when KSU hosts UAB in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.

Thursday’s doubleheader against the Blazers will be the final home games with Head Coach Scott Whitlock at the helm of the Owls softball program and for seniors Abbey Mixon (Canton, Ga./Cherokee HS), Jensen Hackett (Tunnel Hill, Ga./Ringgold HS), Jamie Saunders (Fayetteville, Ga./Georgia Perimeter College) and Sharon Swanson (Canton, Ga./Cherokee HS).
 
Admission for the doubleheader is $3 for both adults and youth, with Kennesaw State students, faculty and staff receiving free admission with a valid KSU ID.
 
Kennesaw State is coming off of a crucial sweep of A-Sun foe Jacksonville over the weekend. The Owls posted wins of 10-4 and 1-0 on Saturday, before completing the season series sweep on Sunday with a 4-3 victory at Bailey Park.
 
Sophomore Natalie Rhodes (Canton, Ga./Cherokee HS) led the KSU offense against the Dolphins with a .500 batting average, including five hits, four runs and three RBI. Mixon was dominating in the circle for the Owls as she went 1-0 with a complete game shutout and a save in 8.2 innings pitched against JU. Mixon registered a 0.81 ERA, tallying six strikeouts and posted an opponent batting average of .182 in her two appearances.
 
The NCAA released its newest RPI rankings of the season on Monday, with the Owls coming in at No. 53 in the ranking. Kennesaw State is the fourth highest ranked team in the A-Sun, only trailing USC Upstate (39), Florida Gulf Coast (46) and Lipscomb (51).
 
Georgia Tech (22-25) went 1-2 in a three-game series at No. 25 North Carolina on Sunday and Monday, April 21-22. The Yellow Jackets split its doubleheader on Sunday, taking game two 8-5, before dropping the rubber game, 11-6 on Monday. Offensively, GT is led by Ashley Thomas, who ranks first on the team and in the ACC with a .432 batting average to go along with 30 RBI and 10 doubles.
 
UAB (29-11) is coming off of a sweep of Conference-USA opponent UTEP over the weekend and has won five of its last six games. The Blazers are playing Alabama State on Tuesday, April 23 prior to Thursday’s doubleheader at KSU. On the season, UAB is 12-0 in games where it scores in the first inning. The Blazers are 25-2 on the year when they score first, and are 24-0 when leading after the sixth inning.
 
The Owls will conclude the 2013 season this weekend as KSU travels to Johnson City, Tenn., for its final regular season series of the season with a three-game series against A-Sun opponent East Tennessee State on Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28.
