KENNESAW, Ga. – It was a tough day at Bailey Park for the Kennesaw State softball team (23-7) as the Owls fell to Georgia Tech, 17-3, on Wednesday, March 27.
The Yellow Jackets (15-17) took control of the game in the third inning, plating 10 runs on five hits and three costly Owl errors. Senior starter
Abbey Mixon (Canton, Ga./Cherokee HS) gave up back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to open the scoring for GT. Later in the inning, the Yellow Jackets scored three runs on a fielding error from senior
Jensen Hackett (Tunnel Hill, Ga./Ringgold HS), before Courtney Ziese hit a two-run home run to left field.
KSU pushed across three runs in the bottom of the third on four-straight hits, including an RBI-double from junior
Sara Sikes (Douglasville, Ga./Georgia) and an RBI-single from senior
Sharon Swanson (Canton, Ga./Cherokee HS).
Georgia Tech added seven runs on seven hits in the top of fourth inning to put the game out of reach.
GT outhit the Owls 14 to eight, with both teams committing three errors. Sikes and sophomore
Natalie Rhodes (Canton, Ga./Cherokee HS) led KSU with two hits in the game.
Hope Rush (8-10) earned the win for the Yellow Jackets and also contributed four RBI, two hits and two runs in the outing. Ashley Thomas added a 3-for-5 performance with three runs and an RBI.
Four Owl pitchers threw in the contest, with Mixon (8-4) taking the loss, while striking out five batters in the first two innings. Freshman
Hannah Weldy (Cumming, Ga./Milton HS) made her first career appearance for Kennesaw State in the fourth frame and earned the first strikeout of her career in 1.1 innings of work.
Kennesaw State returns to Atlantic Sun Conference action this weekend, as the Owls host USC Upstate on Friday and Saturday, March 29-30 at Bailey Park. KSU and the Spartans will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. (ET), followed by a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
