Owls Going for Sixth Straight Win as Alabama State Comes to Town

THE SERIES:
The Kennesaw State baseball team goes for win number six in a row this Tuesday, March 26 as the Owls welcome in non-conference opponent Alabama State for a 6 p.m. ET contest at Stillwell Stadium.
 
The Owls are coming off of a three-game series sweep over Atlantic Sun Conference foe Northern Kentucky this past weekend, moving to 14-10 on the season heading into the final game of a 14-game home stand against the Hornets.
 
Fans in attendance will have the opportunity to meet Kennesaw State head coach Brian Bohannon as the first ever KSU football coach will throw out the game’s first pitch and sign autographs throughout the evening.
 
Tuesday’s game will also feature $1 hotdogs and drinks from the concession stand.

THE OPPONENT
The Hornets are quickly becoming one of the top teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference at 15-10, starting the season off at 8-1.
 
Offensively, Alabama State may be one of the most potent teams the Owls face this season, holding a team batting average of .298 with 244 runs scored. Emmanuel Marrero leads the squad with a .377 average for second year head coach Mervyl Melendez.
 
THE SERIES
Kennesaw State has a stronghold on the all-time series, holding a 9-0 advantage over the Hornets.
 
The Owls won the last meeting earlier this season in Montgomery, Ala. with the black and gold coming out on top, 2-1.
 
LAST OUTING
It was another stellar day on the diamond for the Kennesaw State baseball team on Sunday afternoon as the Owls took a 14-4 win over Atlantic Sun Conference foe Northern Kentucky University, completing the series sweep of the Norse.

The win improves the Owls’ overall record to 14-10 and gives the black and gold a 4-2 record in the A-Sun after outscoring the Norse (2-22, 0-3 A-Sun) 41-9 during the three-game span.

Max Pentecost (Winder, Ga./Winder-Barrow HS) earned three of the 15 hits for the Owls during the win as the catcher went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Bruce had a productive day from the batter’s box as well, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Simmons earned three RBI off of a pair of doubles.

Way made it 19 straight games with a hit after singling through the middle in his final at bat of the day.

On the base paths, the Owls also took three stolen bases, one each from Kal Simmons (Nashville, Ga./Berrien HS) Bo Way (Brunswick, Ga./Glynn Academy) and Pentecost.

From the mound, starting pitcher Kevin Kyle (Atlanta, Ga./Georgia Perimeter Coll.) went six innings giving up just four hits and three runs while striking out four. Colton Cross (Ringgold, Ga./Ringgold HS), Catlan Kendrick (Sharpsburg, Ga./Northgate HS) and Kevin McCoy (Gainesville, Fla./Andrew Coll.) then cleaned up in relief, not allowing a hit to NKU in the final three innings of work.
 
NEXT UP
The Owls will be on the road for the first time since March 3 as the team heads to Deland, Fla. to take on Stetson University in a three-game series starting this Thursday, March 28 at 6:30 p.m. ET.

NEWS AND NOTES
Leading the Way
Senior Bo Way is in the midst of a 19-game hit streak after having hit safely in all but one game so far this year for the black and gold. Way now leads the squad in batting average (.354), slugging percentage (.469) and on base percentage (.417).
 
Simmons in the Clutch
Freshman Kal Simmons is one of the hottest hitters in the lineup for head coach Mike Sansing. The freshman is now hitting .306 with a team-high 22 RBI and has made his way into the top of the batting order.
 
The Bullpen
The bullpen for the Owls is one of the best on average in the league, holding a team ERA of 3.10 and an opposing batting average of just .223, the second best in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
 
Offense Heating Up
The Owls have scored a combined 52 runs over the last five games and are outscoring the opposition 128-94.
 
McCalvin in the Clutch
Sophomore pitcher Justin McCalvin has been lights out in relief for Kennesaw State, throwing 13.1 innings giving up just 11 hits and not allowing an earned run while striking out 18 batters.
 
Duran on First
First baseman Anthony Duran (Miami, Fla./Southwest Miami HS) has been perfect through 2013 so far, holding a fielding percentage of 1.000.
