NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Strong pitching and a big fifth inning led the Kennesaw State softball team past Lipscomb, 2-0, on Sunday, March 17 at Draper Diamond. KSU earned the series win with today’s victory after splitting yesterday’s doubleheader.

The Owls improve to 20-4 and 4-1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, while Lipscomb drops to 11-13 and 2-4 in league play.

With the game scoreless through the first four innings, the Owl offense was ignited in the top of the fifth. Junior Carly Van Auken (Largo, Fla./State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota) drew a two-out walk to keep the inning alive before classmate Sara Sikes (Douglasville, Ga./Georgia) provided a timely double to left center to score Van Auken from first base.

A batter later freshman Missy Perkowski (Woodstock, Ga./Sequoyah HS) plated Sikes from second on an RBI-single to left field to put the Owls up 2-0.

The Bison threatened in the sixth and seventh innings, but junior Amanda Henderson (Covington, Ga./Eastside HS) and the KSU defense held strong to get the shutout victory.

Henderson (12-0) earned the win with four innings of relief work, allowing only three hits and striking out four batters. Sophomore starter Monica Vickery (Rossville, Ga./Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe HS) did not allow a hit in three scoreless innings.

KSU outhit Lipscomb four to three, with Sikes leading the Owls with a 2-for-3 performance, plus an RBI and a run.

Tanner Sanders (7-4) took the loss for the Bison.

Kennesaw State next wraps up the regular season series with Mercer with a single game on Wednesday, March 20 in Macon, Ga. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. (ET).
