Owls Return to the Convocation Center to Host Jacksonville

THE GAME:
The Owls will look to bounce back this weekend as the Kennesaw State women’s basketball team returns home to the KSU Convocation Center to take on Jacksonville University this Saturday, Feb. 9 at noon.

KSU now sits at 5-17 on the year and 1-9 in the Atlantic Sun Conference and looks to topple the Dolphins who come in at 7-15 overall and 3-8 in the league standings.

The game will follow the fifth annual Owls Making Strides 5k race and fans are encouraged to “Think Pink” by wearing pink to the game in support of the fight against breast cancer throughout the day.

Saturday's game sponsor is LGE Community Credit Union with halftime entertainment provided by the Brumby Elementary steel drum band.

Tickets for the game are still $6 for adults, $4 for kids under the age of 12 with Kennesaw State students, faculty and staff as well as military members free with a valid ID.

THE OPPONENT
Jacksonville University comes into Saturday’s game looking to snap a five-game losing skid after taking a 72-51 loss at Stetson this past week.

The Dolphins have three players averaging double-figures scoring this season including Tracie Sneed (11.2 ppg), Jade Cargill (10.7 ppg) and Queen Alford (10 ppg) with Cargill also averaging 8.1 rebounds per game, the fourth highest average in the A-Sun.

THE SERIES
JU leads in the all-time series, 8-5, after taking a 64-52 meeting earlier this season on Jan. 14 in Jacksonville, Fla.
 
Kristina Wells (Douglasville, Ga./Douglas County HS) had the big game for the black and gold, scoring 15 points with six rebounds, six steals and four assists.
 
LAST OUTING
The Kennesaw State women’s basketball team couldn’t connect the two halves as the Owls fell, 57-36, on the road to Atlantic Sun Conference and in-state rival Mercer in Hawkins Arena on Saturday, Feb. 2.
 
Ashley Holliday (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann Academy) led the Owls with 17 points in 38 minutes of action while Gideon finished up with 13 to go with her seven rebounds. Chantel Kennedy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Colorado St.) led both teams with 10 boards while Mason earned seven as well.
 
THE NUMBERS
Sametria Gideon (Madison, Ala./Bob Jones HS) is one of just a handful players in the nation to average a double-double with 11.2 points and 10.4 rebounds per game.
 
The three-point defense of KSU is one of the best in the A-Sun and one of the top 100 in the nation, holding opponents to just a 26.2 percent success rate from beyond the arc.
 
The Owls are committing just 12 fouls per game, putting KSU at No. 4 in the nation in fewest personal fouls per contest.
 
KSU now has three players in the top 10 rebounding in the A-Sun, more than any other school in the conference.
 
NEXT UP
The Owls remain at home after facing Jacksonville, welcoming in North Florida on Monday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. before heading to USC Upstate and East Tennessee State in the next week.

NEWS AND NOTES
Gideon’s Double-Doubles
Senior Sametria Gideon is the only player in the A-Sun to be averaging a double-double on the season with 11.2 points per game and 10.4 rebounds per game. Gideon continues to lead the A-Sun in rebounding with her 10.4 boards per outing average.
 
Gideon in Rare Company
Gideon is one of just three active players in the country to be a school’s career points and rebounds leader. The only 1,000 point and 1,000 rebound player in school history, Gideon now has 1,181 points and 1,015 rebounds to her name.
 
Sister Act Part Two
Holliday, who is now averaging 10.2 points per game after putting in 17 at Mercer, will once again be taking the court against her younger sister, Britney, who is a sophomore guard for the Dolphins.
 
Adams Provides a Spark
Nicole Adams (New Port Richey, Fla./Gulf HS) has made three consecutive starts for head coach Nitra Perry and is now tops on the team in terms of three-point field goal percentage with a 38-percent success rate from beyond the arc.
 
Milestones to look out for
Ashley Holliday (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann Academy) is seeking her 1,000th career point, holding steady at 896, and her 200th three-pointer, currently sitting at 195 makes from beyond the arc.
