Women’s Basketball Set to Host Northern Kentucky on Senior Day

THE GAME:
The Kennesaw State women’s basketball team will host Northern Kentucky this Monday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. ET in the KSU Convocation Center in the home finale for the Owls in the 2012-13 season.
 
The game will serve as senior day as well for Sametria Gideon (Madison, Ala./Bob Jones HS) and Ashley Holliday (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann Academy) as the 7-20 Owls, 3-12 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, look to clinch a spot in the A-Sun Tournament against the 12-12 Norse (9-6 A-Sun).
 
Tickets for the game are still $6 for adults, $4 for kids under the age of 12 with Kennesaw State students, faculty and staff as well as military members free with a valid ID.

THE OPPONENT
Conference newcomer Northern Kentucky comes into Kennesaw, Ga. winners in five of its last six games, taking the last by nine points, 69-60, over Mercer on Saturday.
 
The Norse have put in 94 three-pointers in conference games only this season but have struggled on the road, going just 5-9 away from their home floor.
 
Tiara Hopper leads the offense with an 11.5 points per game average while teammate Kayla Thacker is second in the league in minutes per game with a 36 mpg average.
 
THE SERIES
NKU leads the brief series, taking the first ever meeting between the two schools earlier this season to go up 1-0.
 
KSU scored 38 second half points during the Jan. 26 game in Highland Heights, Ky., but the comeback fell short as the Owls fell, 65-49.
 
Gideon finished the game with her 10th double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds, one shy of her career high, with a 4-for-6 night from the charity stripe. Holliday also ended with 12, hitting on a pair of threes to go with her team-high three assists. Chelsea Mason (Bellevue, Neb./Bellevue West HS) was the third Owl to finish in double-figures scoring with her 11.

The combination of Christine Wylie (Ballarat, Australia) and Nicole Adams (New Port Richey, Fla./Gulf HS) went off for 12 points on the night, Adams putting in a then career-high eight with Wylie tipping in a season-best four. Adams also set a new career mark with three field goals while Wylie earned a season-high with three blocks.

As a team, KSU pulled in 38 rebounds, tying with the Norse in that category, with Gideon’s 14 the top mark for both squads. Mason was good for eight rebounds as well while Wylie hauled in five.
 
LAST OUTING
The Kennesaw State women’s basketball team enjoyed double-digit scoring outings from four separate players, but couldn’t fight of the Lady Bison of Lipscomb as the Owls fall at home in Atlantic Sun Conference action, 55-53.

Mason led the way with 16 points while senior Gideon made it back-to-back double-doubles and 12 on the season with her 12 point, 10 rebound outing.
 
The Owls shot a stellar 52 percent in the first 20 minutes and just 19 percent in the final period.

Holliday and Kristina Wells (Douglasville, Ga./Douglas County HS) were the other two to finish up in double-figures, both ending the game with 11 points with Holliday also earning three assists.

Defensively, Gideon earned four blocks and a steal to go with her game-high 10 rebounds.
 
THE NUMBERS
Gideon is one of just a handful of players in the nation to average a double-double with 11.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game after picking up her 12th double-double of the season against Lipscomb
 
The three-point defense of KSU is one of the best in the A-Sun and one of the top 30 in the nation, holding opponents to just a 26.7 percent success rate from beyond the arc.
 
The Owls are committing just 11 fouls per game, putting KSU at No. 4 in the nation in fewest personal fouls per contest.
 
NEXT UP
The Owls will play two more regular season games, both on the road, starting this Thursday, Feb. 28 at Stetson.

NEWS AND NOTES
Gideon’s Double-Doubles
Senior Sametria Gideon is the only player in the A-Sun to be averaging a double-double on the season with 11.1 points per game and 10.4 rebounds per game. Gideon continues to lead the A-Sun in rebounding with her 10.4 boards per outing average.
 
Gideon in Rare Company
Gideon is one of just four active players in the country to be a school’s career points and rebounds leader. The only 1,000 point and 1,000 rebound player in school history, Gideon now has 1,032 points and 1,070 rebounds to her name.
 
Four Owls Averaging Double-Digits
Four Owls are now averaging double-figures scoring including Gideon (11), Wells (11), Holliday (10) and four-time A-Sun Newcomer of the Week  Mason (11).
 
Adams’ Career Night
Adams is coming off of her best outing to date, putting in a career-high 23 points on six three-pointers and an 8-for-10 day shooting from the field against the Bucs. Adams now has 100 points for the season and is shooting at a .419 clip from three-point land.
 
Milestones to look out for
Holliday-944 points, 201 three-pointers. Gideon-29 rebounds away from the KSU single season record of 311, holding 282, and 7 blocks away from the single season record of 47.
