MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Kennesaw State men’s tennis team (2-2) earned its first two wins of the 2013 season as the Owls posted back-to-back wins in a 7-0 crushing of Alabama A&M, followed by a 6-1 defeat of Alabama State on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
"We did an excellent job of handling very windy and cold conditions today,” said Head Coach T.J. Greggs. “This team is performing well despite missing some key players right now, and people are stepping up. We look forward to the challenge of competing against UAB tomorrow.”
The Owls opened against Alabama A&M by securing the doubles point, the first of the season. Freshman
Tobi Menhofer and
Louis Theodor continued their strong play at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-4 over Nicholas Burger and Dominique Alexander. Sophomore Alexander Pena and senior
Gokalp Ozdemir then posted an 8-1 win over Desta Sandy and Evan Brown at No. 2 doubles, while senor
Nathan She and sophomore
Matthew Johnson won by default as AAMU only had five players active and only two doubles teams playing in the match.
In singles action, She pushed the Owl lead to 2-0 with a win by default on court six, followed by freshman
Maksim Yorsh notching his second singles victory in a row with a 6-0, 6-0 beat down of Brown. Ozdemir secured the Owls win when his opponent, Alexander, retired with the senior leading 6-1, 1-1.
Pena, Johnson and Menhofer rounded out the Owls victory with straight-set wins at No. 3, 5, and 1 singles, respectively.
In the second match of the day, KSU continued its impressive doubles play. Menhofer and Theodor continued to shine and moved to 4-0 on court one with an 8-2 defeat of Bobby Brand and Lex Pierre. The tandems of Pena and Ozdemir and Johnson and Yosh each tallied 8-4 victories at No. 2 and 3 doubles to earn the 1-0 advantage over ASU heading into singles action.
Yorsh started off the Owls in a positive manner with a 6-1, 6-1 win on court three, followed by a Pena 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles. Menhofer’s 6-0, 7-6 (4) success on court one insured the second Owl victory of the day.
Ozdemir then registered a 1-6, 6-0, 6-0 comeback on court two, before Johnson dropped the lone point for KSU at No. 5 singles. She delivered another comeback, winning 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7) after being down 6-4, 3-0 in the second set to wrap the match for the Owls.
Kennesaw State continues its three-match road swing on Sunday, Feb. 17 as the Owls travel to Birmingham, Ala., for a 4 p.m. match with UAB.
