FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Kennesaw State soccer season came to a close on Friday night (Nov. 8) as the Owls suffered a 2-0 setback to Jacksonville in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament semifinals at the FGCU Soccer Complex.

"It was a game that could have gone either way," said head coach Rob King. "After the first 20 minutes we began to dominate but could not put one away. The team that scored first was likely going to it win and we pushed to try and get one after their goal. We are disappointed but pleased with the growth this year. Our seniors have set the course for our young squad and expectations are high as we move forward."

The No. 3 seeded KSU finishes its season with a 9-9-1 overall record, finishing third in the conference a 5-3-1 mark in league play. No. 2 seed Jacksonville improves to 12-7 on the season and advances to Sunday's championship match.

Despite a slow start to the match, Kennesaw State found its grove in the later minutes of the first half, with redshirt-junior forward Katrina Frost and sophomore midfielder Hannah Churchill creating numerous scoring opportunities for the Owls.

The match moved to the second half with the score knotted at 0-0. The Dolphins broke the scoreless tie in the 66th minute as Kaitlyn Bassett carried the ball down the field before playing a through ball to Marie Weckhurst, who tapped the ball past freshman goalkeeper Olivia Sturdivant, who had come off her line to defend the play.

Jacksonville added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when Joy Grove received a cross from Cassie Elmore at the top of the box and fired a bullet to the upper left corner of the goal.

KSU totaled 14 shots, with six on goal, while JU registered 17 shots, with five on frame. Frost led the Owls offense with four shots, while Churchill tallied three shots, all on goal.

The Owls earned five corners in the match, while the Dolphins earned two. Both teams combined for 12 fouls.

Sturdivant recorded three saves in the contest. JU goalkeeper Sarah Sierra notched six saves in the winning effort.

With the loss, the Owls say goodbye to three talented seniors in Frost and defender Kelsey Barr and Tasia Williams.
