KENNESAW, Ga. – In the regular season home finale at Fifth Third Bank Stadium, the Kennesaw State soccer team netted a 0-0 double-overtime tie with Atlantic Sun Conference leader Florida Gulf Coast behind a strong, defensive effort from the KSU backline and six saves from freshman goalkeeper
Olivia Sturdivant on Sunday, Oct. 20.
Â
After the weekend of action, Kennesaw State (7-7-1, 4-2-1) currently sits in a tie for third place in the A-Sun standings with Mercer and Stetson, trailing second place Jacksonville by only two points.
Â
The majority of the first half was played in the midfield with both teams having several chances to take a lead. Redshirt-junior forward
Katrina Frost gave the Owls the best chance of the half when she was taken down just outside of the 18-yard box, setting up a free kick just beyond the box. The subsequent free kick sailed just over the goal.
Â
In the second half, the KSU continued to be very organized on the defensive side as the quartet of redshirt-juniors
Jewelia Strickland and
Alma Gardarsdottir, senior
Kelsey Barr and junior
Iyani Hughes did not allow a shot on goal against the talented Eagle offense. After 90 minutes of action, the game remained scoreless and headed to overtime.
Â
FGCU (11-3-3, 6-0-2) came out in the first overtime period with pressure on the Owl defense, to only be denied by Sturdivant, who made three big saves, one of which came when Eagle forward Kaitlin Parker had two quick shots in front of the net with the first getting blocked by Barr and the second saved by Sturdivant.
Â
Frost again had another dangerous free kick in the second overtime that was saved out of bounds by Eagle goalkeeper Brittany Brown for a KSU corner. A minute later, it looked as though the Owls might claim victory as Frost slipped through the defense and put the ball in the back of the net, but the Fayetteville, Ga., native was called offsides.
Â
KSU notched eight shots in the match, with two on goal, while FGCU tallied 21 shots with six on frame. Frost led the Owl offense with four shots, including two on goal.
Â
KSU earned three corners, while the Eagles totaled 12. Both teams combined for 24 fouls.
Â
Sturdivant secured her sixth shutout of the season with the tie, while Brown finished with two saves.
