KENNESAW, Ga. – It was a joyous occasion at Fifth Third Bank Stadium as the Kennesaw State soccer team sent its 2013 senior class off in style with an important 1-0 win over Stetson on Friday Night (Oct. 18).
With the win, the Owls (7-7-0, 4-2-0) move into a tie with Jacksonville for third place in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings and only a point behind second place Stetson (6-7-2, 4-2-1).
In a competitive first half of play, sophomore midfielder
Elizabeth Johnson gave KSU a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the half. On a corner kick from redshirt-junior defender
Jewelia Strickland in the 44th minute, Johnson headed a shot towards the goal that was deflected back to her by a Hatter defender. The Marietta, Ga., native then rocketed the ball into the upper right corner of the goal for her first career score.
While Stetson pressed in the second half, the Owls remained strong in defense to earn the victory.
Prior to the match, the Owls celebrated the careers of senior defenders
Tasia Williams and
Kelsey Barr, as well as redshirt-junior forward
Katrina Frost. Head coach
Rob King was also presented with a game ball to honor his 150th win at the helm of KSU soccer.
Kennesaw State outshot Stetson, 10 to nine, with KSU totaled four shots on frame to the Hatters' three. Frost led the Owls with four shots, while junior midfiedler
Nicole Calder and Johnson each tallied a pair of shots.
KSU earned four corners in the win, while Stetson totaled two. Both teams combined for 14 fouls.
Freshman goalkeeper
Olivia Sturdivant collected three saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season. Victoria Troccoli and Amber Law each split time in goal for the Hatters, with Troccoli earning two saves and Law notching one save in the contest.
Kennesaw State will next battle reigning A-Sun champion and conference leader Florida Gulf Coast in its home finale at Fifth Third Bank Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. (ET).
