MACON, Ga. – The Kennesaw State soccer team dropped a double-overtime thriller to Mercer in heartbreaking fashion on Friday night (Oct. 11), as the Bears scored in the game-winning goal with only a minute left in the second-overtime period for a 2-1 win at Bear Field.

In the 109th minute of the match Haleigh Svede picked up a loose ball and fired a shot to the right of freshman goalkeeper Olivia Sturdivant for the winning score. It was the third match in the last four between the Owls and the Bears that went to extra time.

In an intense first half of play with both teams earning multiple chances to score, redshirt-junior defender Jewelia Strickland gave the Owls a 1-0 lead with her first goal of the season in the 34th minute. On a free kick just beyond on the KSU defensive half, Strickland sent in a ball that took a big bounce in front of and over Mercer goalkeeper Maggie Cropp, who had come off her line to play the ball.

The Owls held the lead until the 71st minute when Kim Murphy notched the equalizer for the Bears on a cross from MacKenzie Stewart. With neither team able to score the game-winner, the match headed to overtime, the first extra time match of the season for KSU.

Each team totaled 18 shots in the match, with 11 shots on frame for the Owls and six on goal for the Bears. Redshirt-junior forward Katrina Frost and freshmen forwards Maggie Gaughan and Monica Herrera led KSU with three shots each, with all of Herrera's shots on goal.

KSU earned four corner kicks in the match, with Mercer totaling 16 corners. Both teams combined for 14 fouls.

Sturdivant tallied four saves in the contest, while Cropp totaled nine.

Kennesaw State returns to Fifth Third Bank Stadium for the final two home matches of the season, facing Stetson on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m., for Senior Day 2013. The Owls will honor senior defenders Tasia Williams and Kelsey Barr, as well as Frost. KSU will then battle reigning A-Sun champion Florida Gulf Coast for its home finale on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m.
