2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Baseball Preseason All-Conference team

KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State senior second baseman Andy Almonte has been selected to the 2013 Atlantic Sun Baseball Preseason All-Conference team.

The league office unveiled the Atlantic Sun Conference Baseball Preseason All-Conference team on Wednesday afternoon as the leagues head coaches chose the team.

“This is a well deserved award for Andy and a testament to his hard work,” Head Coach Mike Sansing said. “He had a good season last year as an offensive second baseman and we look for him to do the same again this year.”

Almonte (Moca, Puerto Rico, East Paulding HS/Gordon College) started all 58 games for the Owls in 2012 while maintaining a .295 batting average. He belted five homeruns and tallied 11 doubles while scoring 49 runs and notching 33 RBI. Almonte provided some of his most productive games against the nation’s top teams, going 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, and a homerun against Georgia Tech and again against USC Upstate batting 4-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.

In the 2012 Atlantic Sun conference championship, Almonte batted .250 (5-for-20) with four runs and three RBI while helping the Black and Gold play their way into the championship game.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the conference and the coaches from around the league,” Almonte said. “It goes to show that hard work does pay off. I’m working to get better every day and it has gone along way to help my recent success. I know I have room for improvement and I will continue to work hard to prove I am deserving of this award.”

The honors for Almonte extend back to his playing days on the junior college level as well as his prep career. While at Gordon College, Almonte was a two-time GJCAA All-Region Team selection as a shortstop. Batting .400 as a sophomore, he scored 62 runs and stole 27 bases. Prior to his stellar sophomore season he was selected to the 2010 Region XVII All-Tournament Team, and before 2010 he enjoyed a standout career at East Paulding high school where he was named the GHSA state tournament’s Most Valuable Player in 2009, as well as East Paulding’s Offensive Player of the year his junior and senior seasons.

Almonte and the rest of the Kennesaw State baseball team will open the 2013 campaign with a three-game series against Jacksonville State at home on Feb. 15-17. Season tickets are on sale for the full 33-home game schedule at $39, a savings of over $100. Single game tickets are also available for $6 for adults and $4 for youth (ages 3-12). Group tickets for groups of 10 or more are available for advanced purchase, excluding the Auburn (3-12) and Georgia games (4-2) where individual tickets will be $10 for adults and $6 for youth.
