NISWONGER HOMEPAGE

MEET INFORMATION

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State track and field team will compete at the site of the 2013 Atlantic Sun Indoor Championship on Friday, Jan 18 – 19 at the Annual Niswonger Invitational, hosted by conference foe East Tennessee State. The Owls return to competition for the second consecutive weekend, and will again see action against conference rivals ETSU, Lipscomb and USC Upstate.

“This is pretty much our only indoor competition where there aren’t limited entries, so we’re really loading up our athletes in several events,” Head Coach Andy Eggerth said. “We have 17 women entered in the 60m dash to get some speed work in. This provides an intense training stimulus; but it also has them ready for anything when the A-Sun Championship rolls around. The Niswonger Invitational is at ETSU where the Conference Championship is held so our new athletes have an opportunity to preview this unique facility. Lipscomb, USC Upstate, and host ETSU will all be competing; so we’ll have a pretty good idea of how we stack up after this weekend. “

LAST TIME OUT:
At the last competition, the throwers led the Owls as Gwen Jones of the women’s team and Martynas Sedys of the men’s team claimed Atlantic Sun Field Athlete of the Week honors for their performance at the Blazer Invitational. Each athlete holds the top spot in the conference as Jones’ throw of 13.30m earned her third place in the shot put, while Sedys took home first place in the weight throw with a toss of 17.45m. Another key performer at the Invitational was Ryan Burruss who posted a personal best in the 3000m with a mark of 8:39.44 to place seventh.

2012 NISWONGER INVITATIONAL:
Only the throwers represented the Owls at the 2012 Niswonger Invitational. Leading the team was senior Suzee Mills who collected her first title of the 2012 campaign with a 17.09m toss in the weight throw. Senior #Shannon# Hooper finished fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 15.77m, while Joyce Smith finished 20th.

DAVID E. WALKER TRACK AT GENTRY FIELD:
Located inside the ETSU/MSHA Mini-Dome, the David E. Walker Track -- named for the legendary Bucs coach and player -- has hosted countless meets including the annual Niswonger Invitational, one of the largest indoor meets in the nation; plus the Atlantic Sun and Southern Conference Indoor Championships, AAU Championships, and the NAIA National Championships. The most notable figure along the Johnson City skyline, the Mountain States Health Alliance Athletics Center, is a multi-sport facility completed in 1977. The 4.5-acre complex contains four basketball courts, six tennis courts, three racquetball courts, indoor batting cages, a rifle range, a full-size indoor track, numerous locker rooms, facilities for weight training and athletic training, a sports medicine rehab clinic, and a physical education research laboratory.  The massive “Mini-Dome” has 14,000 seats and also houses the administrative offices for ETSU Athletics.

The Kennesaw State track and field program has been one of the top programs since its first year of competition in 2005. The men have dominated the A-Sun Track & Field competition, winning the outdoor conference three of the last four years (2008-2010-2011), and have been crowned Indoor Conference Champions in 2008, 2010, and most recently in 2012. The Kennesaw State women’s Track & Field program is on the cusp of becoming a perennial powerhouse of the Atlantic Sun Conference after posting runner-up finishes in both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2009, 2010 and 2012. The team is led by third year Head Coach Andy Eggerth, a two-time men’s Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year and 2012 Women's Indoor Coach of the Year.
