BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Kennesaw State track and field team wrapped up the Blazer Invitational on Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex, but have room for improvement with the Atlantic Sun Conference Indoor Championship in almost a month.
“We have some work to do if we want to compete for another title this year,” Head Coach
Andy Eggerth said. “In spite of where we are at as a team, there were many individual bright spots. We were able to gauge where we are at competing against both Lipscomb and East Tennessee State and we know the amount of work we need to put in before February.”
Senior
Michelle Quimby opened the evening with a first place finish in the pole vault with a distance of 3.70m, one centimeter off her KSU school record. Sophomore
Alicia Whittle placed fourth in the 60m dash with a KSU record tying time of 7.56.
Senior
Sadio Diallo recorded top-12 finishes in the men’s 60m dash and 400m as he placed eighth in the 60m with a time of 6.89, and 12th in the 400m at 50.14.
The distance runners were represented by senior
Ryan Burruss as he ran a personal best in the 3000m at 8:39.44 to place seventh. Sophomore
Josh Jenkins placed 13th at 9:06.04, and freshman
Justin Howell finished 14th at 9:19.67. For the women,
Andzelika Bobrova continued her successful 2013 indoor campaign with a seventh place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:20.15.
Gwen Jones broke her own school record in the shot put with a third place throw of 13.30m (45-08.50).
Suzee Mills collected a fourth place showing in the weight throw with a distance of 16.80m (55-01.50), while
Joyce Smith finished 15th with a toss of 14.49m (47-06.50).
“Overall the entire throwing group did well,” Assistant Coach
Duane Morris said. “We had multiple personal records set, but we have a lot of technical flaws we need to work on before the A-Sun Championship. This group is filled with hard working and talented athletes that are strong enough to make the corrections.”
The team will return to competition on Friday, Feb. 18 when the team travels to Johnson City, Tenn. to compete in the Niswonger Invitational, hosted at the MSHAA Center, the site of the 2013 A-Sun Indoor Championship.
