KENNESAW, Ga. – Senior #Baylee Strachan’s# 11 kills and .600 attack percentage weren’t enough to hoist the Kennesaw State volleyball team over Lipscomb as the Bison took a 3-0 (16-25, 22-25, 23-25) win in the KSU Convocation Center Friday night.
The loss is just the second for the Owls on their home floor this season and knocks KSU back to .500 in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings at 2-2 and 12-6 overall. Lipscomb remains undefeated in league competition at 4-0 with a 7-8 mark overall.
“We had way too many errors early on,” said Kennesaw State head coach
Karen Weatherington. “We had a great plan going in but when you have that many unforced errors in the first set it really puts you on your heels.”
KSU took Lipscomb to the brink in the final set, climbing back within one point at 24-23 on a
Keyaira Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Ridgeview HS) kill. But Lipscomb senior Kaycee Green picked up the match winning kill one play later with an assist from Caitlin Dotson, 25-23.
The Owls again had to fight from behind in the second set, rebounding from a 5-1 deficit to a 6-5 lead early on.
Emily Bean (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike HS) put the home team within one of the Bison with a kill to make it 21-20 LU, but the Lipscomb offense proved strong, rallying to take a 25-22 set win.
Set number one went the way of the Bison, 25-16, after a 3-0 run to end the set. KSU never led but did manage to tie it up on three separate occasions. Seniors
Turea Jones (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa JC) and Strachan (Sioux City, Iowa/Winthrop) combined for seven kills in the set.
The Owls did hit .237 as a team, slightly above their .216 average, with Strachan’s 11 kills leading the way. Stevenson and Bean each finished the match with seven.
Setter
Sara Metroka (New Castle, Ind./New Castle Chrystler HS) finished with 34 assists while libero
Camille Pedraza (Marietta, Ga./Kell HS) ended things with 10 digs. Jones was tops for both teams with her 12 digs.
“I’m looking forward to tomorrow,” added Weatherington. “We’re going to come out and focus on our side of the net because we still have the advantage of playing at home. It’s going to be a good, even match and hopefully we can come out on top.”
The Owls will be back on the court tomorrow as they host Northern Kentucky in a 3 p.m. match.
