KSU Volleyball Set for Lipscomb, Northern Kentucky

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State volleyball team is gearing up for one of its biggest Atlantic Sun weekends of the season, playing host to first place Lipscomb and conference newcomer Northern Kentucky.

The Owls are now 12-5 on the year and 2-1 in the young A-Sun schedule while Friday’s opponent Lipscomb is 6-8 overall and 3-0 in the conference. Northern Kentucky is an impressive 14-2 in 2012 and 2-1 in its first ever A-Sun season.

Friday’s game is set for 5 p.m. at the KSU Convocation Center, where the Owls are 6-1, with the first 100 fans receiving free Bison Sliders from Ted’s. Kennesaw State then wraps up the five-game home stand with a 3 p.m. contest against NKU on Saturday.

Perennial powerhouse Lipscomb comes in with its typically high-powered offense, averaging 13.73 kills per set to go with a .203 attack percentage. Sophomore Jewell Dobson is now hitting .330 to lead Lipscomb who is currently enjoying a three-game win streak.

Northern Kentucky is best in the league in terms of hitting percentage at .252 and boasts the top two hitters statistically in the A-Sun in Jenna Ruble and Shelby Buschur. Rubble is now hitting .371 with 117 kills while Buschur holds a .346 attack percentage with 201 kills.

The Owls continue to be one of the most well rounded teams in the A-Sun, ranking second in team hitting percentage at .216 and third in opponent hitting percentage, holding the opposition to a .180 mark.

Senior Baylee Strachan (Sioux City, Iowa/Winthrop) is enjoying one of the best seasons of her career, hitting .323 with 279 kills and 32 blocks. Teammate Emily Bean (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike HS) is also stepping up her game, coming off of a 38 kill, 20 dig, eight block week.

Setter Sara Metroka (New Castle, Ind./New Castle Chrystler HS) now ranks in the top 50 nationally in assists with 631 total. The junior put up a career high 67 during a win over USC Upstate last week.

Defensively, libero Camille Pedraza (Marietta, Ga./Kell HS) is leading the squad with 257 digs, or 4.67 per set, while freshman Cierra Royster (Mableton, Ga./Cumburland Christian HS) leads the way in blocks with 36.
