KSU Volleyball Gearing Up For Big A-Sun Weekend

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State volleyball team is coming off of one of its most competitive matches to date after a 3-1 win over USC Upstate to start off Atlantic Sun Conference competition this past Tuesday.

The Owls, 11-4 on the year and 1-0 in the A-Sun, now turn their attention to a pair of weekend conference games starting on Friday with Florida Gulf Coast followed by a Saturday meeting with Stetson. Both matches will take place at the KSU Convocation Center.

Saturday’s 3 p.m.  match will double as a MUST Ministries event, with all in attendance encouraged to donate new socks and underwear. Admission will be $3 for those who make donations at the door.

First serve on Friday against the Eagles is set for 7 p.m. as KSU looks to remain undefeated at home as well as in the A-Sun with 4-7 Florida Gulf Coast coming to town. FGCU currently sits at second in the league in blocks per set with a 2.01 average. 6-2 sophomore Olivia Menser is third in the A-Sun with 39 total blocks in 2012.

The Hatters of Stetson University bring their 3-13 record to Kennesaw State after a Friday night match at Mercer. Stetson is currently 2-1 on the road, however, and is second in the A-Sun in total blocks with 105.

The Owls now rank second in the league standings in hitting percentage and service aces after hitting .260 against the Spartans with eight aces in the conference opener. KSU currently holds a .215 attack percentage and is at 80 aces for the year.

Setter Sara Metroka (New Castle, Ind./New Castle Chrysler) had one of the best matches of her career, putting up 67 assists against Upstate while senior Turea Jones (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa JC) and sophomore Keyaira Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Ridgeview HS) each had 20 kills.

Defensively, libero Camille Pedraza (Marietta, Ga./Kell HS) had her fifth match with 20 or more digs this season after earning 20 on Tuesday. Freshman Cierra Royster (Mableton, Ga./Cumberland HS) took back over the team lead in blocks with 32 while senior Baylee Strachan (Sioux City, Iowa/Winthrop) is right behind with 29.
