SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Kennesaw State volleyball team remains undefeated to open the 2012 season after a three set victory over Savannah State to open up play at the Tiger Volleyball Invitational. The Owls won in straight sets, taking the match 25-10, 25-9, 25-13.
With the win, the Black and Gold improve to 4-0 on the season, their best start since the program began in 2005. Savannah State falls to 0-4.
The first set was all Owls as the team earned the first set victory over the hometown team Tigers 25-10. The second set was dominated much like the first, but to a slightly better tune as
Sara Metroka (New Castle, Ind./New Castle Chrysler High School) opened the frame with a 4-0 advantage off her serve. The command of the set continued as the Black and Gold took the set 25-9 to lead the match 2-0.
In the third set, Kennesaw State further imposed their will, taking the set 25-13 and the match in consecutive sets.
Keyaira Stevenson (Columbia, S.C. / Ridgeview) led the way for the Owls with 15 kills from her outside hitter position, while
Turea Jones (Santa Rosa, Calif. / Rincon Valley Christian) and
Baylee Strachan (Sioux City, Iowa / Bishop Hellan) each had eight.
Camile Pedraza (Marietta, Ga. / Kell) and
Jenna Wilt (Woodstock, Ga. / Etowah) each contributed in the service game as both recorded three aces and two assists. Metroka was the team leader in assists as the setter provided 34 on the match.
"We are very happy with our win," head coach Karen Weatherington said. "We came in looking for contributions from the new players as well as leadership from the returners as we got just that. Keyaira (Stevenson) was amazing all around and her fire led us. We hope to see our hard work and efforts continue to pay off."
Kennesaw State will resume play later Friday evening as they are slated to take on Southern Utah of the Big Sky Conference at 5 pm. Keep up with Owls volleyball and the entirety of the Tiger Volleyball Invitational by following KSU on Twitter at
