KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State baseball team could never find its rhythm at the plate on Saturday afternoon as it dropped game two of its series against Belmont, 11-1, at Stillwell Stadium.

The loss drops the Owls to 25-17 (11-6 A-Sun) for the season, while the win improves the Bruins to 27-15 (12-5 A-Sun). The result of Saturday’s game now places the Black and Gold in third place in the A-Sun with 10 conference games remaining.

For the second straight day the Belmont offense jumped on Kennesaw State’s starting pitcher in the early innings as KSU starter Zak Griffith was touched up for three runs on three hits in the top of the second inning.

The Owls scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the second as junior Ronnie Freeman led off the inning with a single. An Andy Chriscaden single moved Freeman to third base as he was eventually driven home on an RBI groundout by senior Will Howard making the score, 3-1.

That is the closest KSU would get in the contest as the Bruins blew the game open in the middle innings scoring two runs in the fourth and five in the sixth. Griffith’s final line for the afternoon was five and a third innings pitched giving up 11 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits. The senior also struck out two batters and walked one.

Kennesaw State’s bullpen did a good job of slowing down the Belmont attack in the later innings as freshman Jacob Moore and sophomore Drew Duncan combined to throw three and two thirds of shutout baseball.

The bright spot for the Black and Gold offensively came from sophomore Chris McGowan as he went 2-for-3 in the game which extended his hitting streak to nine games.

Kennesaw State will look to get back on track, and take the series over Belmont, on Sunday afternoon as first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday is also Church Bulletin Day at Stillwell Stadium as anyone who brings a church bulletin to the stadium will get into the game for free.
