MARIETTA, Ga. - The KSU men's and women's tennis teams will wrap up their regular season this weekend at Fair Oaks Tennis Center, marking the final home matches for senior players
Vera Shkundina and
Simon Janik. The Owls will face North Florida on Friday, followed by Jacksonville on Saturday, where the seniors will be recognized.
The KSU women (13-6, 5-2 A-Sun) are the conference's hottest team right now, having taken five straight to race into third place in the conference, knocking off conference No. 2, ETSU, last weekend on the road. The only team hotter than the Owls are the visiting Ospreys of North Florida (12-4, 7-0 A-Sun), who sit in the top spot in the standings and have already clinched a share of the A-Sun regular season crown.
The Owls are being led by their top four singles players, with Shkundina playing in the top spot and sporting a 6-1 record in the conference. Additionally, sophomore
Alexandra Apostu (this week's Atlantic Sun Player of the Week) and freshman
Virginie Stein sit undefeated in the conference in singles, and as a doubles team. Apostu holds down the No. 2 spot in the singles lineup, followed by Stein, and the pair plays at the top spot in doubles.
The Ospreys have four players sporting perfect conference marks in singles, including their top three players. Senior Aline Berkenbrock holds down the top spot with an unblemished conference record, followed by junior Lorena Aviles, and senior Danielle Day. Freshman Marina Cunningham is also undefeated in conference play, playing most of her matches at the No. 6 spot. In doubles, Berkenbrock and Aviles are #73 in NCAA Division I, playing at the top spot.
In a show of how strong both programs are at the top, UNF and KSU are 34-1 at the top three spots in conference play coming in to this weekend. The match is scheduled for a noon start.
"It's going to be an exciting weekend for KSU tennis," indicated Owls Head Coach
Jeff Kutac. "We're looking forward to going out there and fighting hard."
Saturday's match will see a rematch of a tight 4-3 win for the Owls a year ago. Jacksonville (6-11, 3-4 A-Sun) will be fighting for one of the remaining playoff spots for the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament. Their best singles record belongs to their No. 1 player, Aline Staudt. Staudt sits at 3-4 in the A-Sun at the top spot. The Dolphins and Owls will square off at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Shkundina will be recognized before the match, graduating with numerous KSU records.
On the men's side, the Owls (10-11, 1-6 A-Sun) will be trying to pull off what would be the biggest upset in the history of the program, as they face off with #58 North Florida (16-5, 6-1 A-Sun) on Friday at 4:00 p.m. The Ospreys lone blemish in the conference came at the hands of ETSU, who have wrapped up the top seed in the A-Sun Tournament next weekend on their campus. The Ospreys have relied on contributions by a variety of players this season, led by senior No. 1 Moritz Buerchner, who is 5-1 at the top spot in the A-Sun.
The match against Jacksonville on Saturday will be another rematch of a 4-3 Owls win from last season. The Owls fought back to win a 4-3 match on the road agains the Dolphins (3-16, 1-6 A-Sun). Like the Owls, the Dolphins have been eliminated from playoff contention. They are led in wins by Eduardo Martinez (8-11, 3-4 A-Sun), who has played the majority of his matches in the No. 4 spot. Owl senior
Simon Janik, the first graduating senior in the history of KSU Men's Tennis, will be recognized before the match. The Owls and Dolphins will face off at 10:00 a.m.
