Owls Come From Behind to Upend WCU, 11-9

Chriscaden leads team with six RBI

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Kennesaw State baseball team would have to come back from a 7-0 deficit to beat Western Carolina. Largely in part to Andy Chriscaden’s six RBI night, the Owls would shock the Catmounts and steal an 11-9 victory at Hennon Stadium on Tuesday night.

Kennesaw would dig their selves a big hole early in Tuesday’s bout. Down 7-0 in the third inning, the offense would return to ordinary in the top of the fourth inning. The first of Chriscaden’s six RBI’s came on a two RBI homerun down the left field line that would put the Black and Gold on the board. Notching the seniors homerun total to six on the season, and his fourth in five games.

KSU would add another run in the fifth inning on an RBI single up the middle by Chriscaden, but would take the lead in the sixth after plating seven runs. The Owls would send 11 men to the plate in the inning. Belting out back-to-back-to-back RBI singles by Peyton Hart, Andy Almonte and Ronnie Freeman, the stage would be set for the hot bat of Chriscaden to return to the box.

With one swing of the bat, Chriscaden would clear the bases with a double to give the Owls the lead. Coming around to score on a Max Pentcost single, Kennesaw would take an 8-6 advantage into the final third of the game.

Senior Zak Griffith kept the Catamounts at bay with five innings pitched, allowing four runs from the 22 batters faced. Finding relief from Justin McCalvin and Caden Fergusson, WCU would be shutdown in the final two innings and fall in an a resilient effort by the Owls, 11-9. With the win Griffith moves to 2-1 on the season and the Black and Gold advance to 15-10.

For the fourteenth time in 2012, the Owls have erupted for double-digit hits. Scoring in double digits for the sixth time, KSU has found themselves to be amongst the nations top offensive teams.

Kennesaw will return home to face Western Carolina on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at Stillwell Stadium. Projected to be on the mound for the Owls is freshman Nathan Harsh.
