2011-12 All A-Sun Selections
Official A-Sun Announcement
KENNESAW, Ga. – A pair of Kennesaw State Owls were honored for their accomplishments on the basketball court during the 2011-12 men’s basketball season, as Markeith Cummings earned a spot on the All-Atlantic Sun Conference Second Team and Delbert Love was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman squad, the conference announced on Monday.
Cummings, a junior, earned a spot on the All A-Sun Second Team for the third straight season Monday, as he enters the week second in the league in scoring with 15.4 points per game. The third leading scorer in Owls history, Cummings led the team in points in 12 games this season, while he was second on Lewis Preston’s squad with 5.3 rebounds per
contest, currently 15
th best in the league. The Birmingham, Ala., native has led the Black and Gold in scoring in each of his three seasons with the program.
“I feel that Markeith is deserving of this award because of his consistency in this league over the past three seasons,” Preston commented. “I look forward to him stepping up on and off the floor and finishing off his A-Sun career on a positive note.”
Love, the first signee of the Lewis Preston era, provided a glimpse of how bright the future is for Kennesaw State hoops. The Cleveland, Ohio, native is currently the leading scorer among freshmen in the A-Sun, finishing up the season with 12.4 points per game, with several performances this season that raised eyebrows across the land. His 27 points against Missouri on Dec. 15 was the highest total by any player against the No. 8-ranked Tigers until late January.
"I'm very thankful to everyone who made this possible, especially my coaches, who gave me an opportunity to contribute this season," Love commented. "The hard work continues into the offseason. I can't allow myself to have any letdown as I get ready for next fall, I want to continue to improve and help this team as much as I can."
Love is fifth in the A-Sun with 1.7 steals per contest, and was a workhorse for the Owls all season long, as his 36.5 minutes per game are currently the third most among all freshmen in Division I basketball on the way to being one of just three unanimous selections to the All-Freshman team. He was honored as the A-Sun Newcomer of the Week on Feb. 7 after scoring points 19 each that week against ETSU and USC Upstate.
“I’m very happy for Delbert being a unanimous selection for the All-Freshman team. It shows that hard work and consistency pays off,” Preston said. “This signals the start of what I feel will be a great career for Delbert as an Owl.”
Cummings and Love will join junior and A-Sun rebounding leader Aaron Anderson in anchoring a 2012-13 squad that has already announced the signing of four incoming freshmen. Cummings is excited to help the squad attain new levels of success on the floor come next fall.
“I want to thank everyone who selected me for this award, it’s a great honor,” Cummings said. “First and foremost, I’m disappointed with how we finished up as a team this season, but I’m confident that things are turning around and that we will have a different mindset next year, and I’m going to use this as motivation to help take our program to the next level.”
