Game Notes

KENNESAW, Ga. – After a long opening weekend that saw the Owls baseball team play a scrambled schedule, the Black and Gold will travel to Montgomery, Ala., to play Alabama State on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The Owls went 1-2 on their opening weekend with one-run losses on Friday to both Bradley University and Virginia Tech, before bouncing back on Sunday to beat the Hokies 6-3.

In the history of the series between Alabama State and Kennesaw, the Owls own an 8-0 record against the Hornets having outscored the squad 97-23.  In four of the meetings, the Owls have shut out the Hornets and scored nine or more runs in every contest.

The last time the two schools faced off was 2009 in what was the closest scoring margin between the two programs. The Owls won 12-9 after scoring 11 runs in the first three innings to cap off a season sweep of the Hornets that included a 13-0 win over the team previously in the season.

This past weekend showed a lot of potential for the 2012 Owls team, as the team proved capable of flourishing in all aspects of the game. In three games, the squad collected five extra base hits, stole six bases, struck out 17 opposing batters and ended the weekend with a plus one scoring margin. Josh Carr reached the 150 strikeout milestone, while Arron Dobbs scored his 50th run for the Black and Gold.

Freshman, Colton Cross will be the starter on the mound for the Owls on Wednesday, as he will be making his first-ever collegiate start. Cross made an appearance on opening night in the team’s 3-2 loss to Virginia Tech as he pitched 2.2 innings in relief, not allowing an earned run.

Alabama State will be the beginning of a 10-game road trip with games at Memphis, Georgia Tech, Jacksonville State, Georgia and Georgia State ensuing. In 2011 the Owls went 5-6 against these five programs, while grabbing a win against each. The meeting against Georgia on March 6 will be part of the Gwinnett Baseball Classic, taking place at Coolray Field in Gwinnett, the home of the Atlanta Braves triple-A organization, the Gwinnett Braves.

The Owls will play on the road over a 20 day span before returning to the friendly confines of Stillwell Stadium, when they will take on Georgia State in a two game series on March 10, followed by a match-up against UAB and Presbyterian on March 21 and March 23, before opening up Atlantic Sun Conference play against in-state rival Mercer on March 16.
