Owls Head to Lipscomb, Northern Kentucky for Two A-Sun Matches

KENNESAW, Ga. – With just four matches remaining in the regular season, the Kennesaw State volleyball team will head to Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky for a pair of crucial Atlantic Sun contests this weekend in the Owls fight for a postseason berth.

KSU is currently tied with Mercer for sixth place at 5-9 in the A-Sun with the top six teams making the cut for the postseason tournament in Nashville, Tenn. starting on Nov. 15.

The black and gold, now 16-13 overall, fell to both Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky in straight sets back on Sept. 28-29 in the KSU Convocation Center, but the Owls head out holding one of the best road records in the conference at 7-2.

Seniors Turea Jones (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa JC) and Baylee Strachan (Sioux City, Iowa/Winthrop) have been strongholds for the Owls thus far, Jones putting up 10 double-doubles and Strachan hitting a team high .333 in 2012. In her last two matches alone, Jones has totaled 27 kills, 23 digs and six of the team’s 16 total blocks. Chade Martin (Augusta, Ga./Grovetown HS) added seven blocks of her own with Strachan earning five.

Setter Sara Metroka (New Castle, Ind./New Castle Chrysler) reached the 1,000 assists plateau for the second time in her three year career, earning number 1,060 against Jacksonville this past Saturday. Metroka’s school record is now at 3,142 total assists with the junior 66th in the nation in assists per set this season, holding a 10.50 average.

Friday night’s opponent, second place Lipscomb (15-10, 12-2 A-Sun), boasts one of the top offenses in the country, ranking first in the A-Sun in total kills and 29th in the nation. Kaycee Green leads the Bisons as well as the conference with her 4.32 kills per set and 216 total in A-Sun matches only. Caitlin Dotson aids in the offensive effort with 11.88 assists per set.

A-Sun newcomer Northern Kentucky (21-7, 8-6) is now hitting .248 as a team while holding opponents to just a .187 success rate. Jenna Ruble is hitting .348 on her own, the second highest in the league, with setter Jenna Schreiver tops in the A-Sun with 1,177 total assists.

The Owls will take on the Bisons Friday at 7:30 p.m. before heading to Northern Kentucky for a 3:30 p.m. contest on Saturday. East Tennessee State and Mercer will then await KSU to wrap up the regular season, both away from home for the black and gold.
