DELAND, Fla. – The Kennesaw State volleyball team completed the season sweep of Stetson on Friday night, taking a 3-0 (25-17,25-21,25-23) road win over the Hatters in Atlantic Sun Conference action.
Senior
Turea Jones (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa JC) had another double-digit kill outing to bring the Owls to 16-10 on the year, 5-6 in the A-Sun and 7-1 on the road. Stetson falls to 4-23 with the loss and still winless in the conference at 0-10.
“The win exuded a complete team effort for us tonight,” said Kennesaw State head coach
Karen Weatherington. “There's always a point in the season where the seniors start to play with a gleam in their eye and I saw that tonight from Turea and Baylee (Strachan).”
Jones and
Emily Bean (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike HS) combined for six kills in the first set for KSU, taking a 1-0 advantage in the match with a 25-17 set win. An attack error by the Hatters gave the Owls their first lead at 6-5 and the black and gold never looked back, taking the win with a
Baylee Strachan (Sioux City, Iowa/Winthrop) kill.
Set two was a much closer affair with the score knotted up late at 19-19. Jones then came up with a crucial kill to give the Owls the lead for good at 20-19 as KSU ran away with the set late, taking a 25-21 win on yet another Jones kill.
The Owls took control of the third set early on, grabbing a 2-1 lead on a pair of Stetson errors. A 5-1 run by the black and gold put the score at 16-9 with the match winner coming on a Strachan kill to give KSU the 25-23 set win, holding off a Stetson comeback attempt.
Jones led both teams with her 14 kills and .250 attack percentage with Strachan hitting .500 to go with her eight kills, three aces and two blocks.
Setter
Sara Metroka (New Castle, Ind./New Castle Chrysler HS) had the double-double for KSU, bringing home 35 assists to go with her 12 digs. Libero
Camille Pedraza (Marietta, Ga./Kell HS) was one dig shy of the 20 mark, coming up with 19 total and a pair of assists.
“Sara and Camille combined for more than half of our team’s digs with 31 and that’s a crucial stat,” added Weatherington. “We really settled into our game early and it was that defensive spark that led us to the win over the Hatters.”
The Owls will now head down to Fort Myers, Fla. to take on the first place Florida Gulf Coast Eagles Saturday at 7 p.m.
