KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s soccer team looks to extend its unbeaten streak to four matches as it hosts Belmont in its highly anticipated 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference opener on Friday night at 7 p.m.
The Owls ended non-conference play on a high note finishing the last three matches with a 2-0-1 record. Their last match ended in a hard-fought 1-1 tie against West Florida on Sunday. KSU outshot UWF by a count of 15-11, and it also hit the crossbar twice in the tie.
Overall, Kennesaw State (4-3-1) was very productive in its non-conference play as it is currently ranked in the top three of the A-Sun in all three offensive triple crown categories. The Owls are second in points with 51, tied for first in goals with 18 and tied for second in assists with 15 helpers.
Redshirt-freshman Katrina Frost continues to lead the way for the Black and Gold as she leads all A-Sun players in goals with eight and points with 16. Her eight goals this season leads all Division I players in the state of Georgia and it also puts her in a tie for 18th in the nation in total goals scored.
Kennesaw State is unbeaten in A-Sun conference openers as it has a 4-0-2 all-time record. The Owls are also 5-1-2 all-time against Belmont. Senior forward Kristin Marietta leads all current Owls in points against the Bruins as she has recorded two goals and an assist in her career against BU.
Sophomore midfielder Kelsey Barr is excited about her first A-Sun contest, and she likes where the team is at as it enters conference play.
“We are all very excited for this weekend as there has been a lot of buildup in the locker room heading into conference play,” Barr said. “Our practices have been very good this week and as a whole the team is much more familiar with each other now compared to six weeks ago at the start of preseason. Our chemistry on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball is much better and I think that will get us off to a strong start.”
Belmont (3-4) is coming off a 2-1 win over Arkansas State last Friday night. The Bruins return seven starters from a team that went 5-11 a year ago. Belmont was picked to finish seventh in the A-Sun Preseason Poll and it is led by Taylor Smith who has a team-high three goals on the season.
Fans are encouraged to hang around following the match as there will be a post-match fireworks show that will be sponsored by KSU Alumni Association to wrap up the Homecoming festivities on Friday.
