KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s soccer team lost a hard-fought, non-conference matchup to Samford, 4-1, on Friday night in front of 543 fans at KSU Soccer Stadium.

The loss drops the Owls to 2-3 on the season, while the win improves the Bulldogs to 2-3 for the year.

KSU controlled play for most of the first half generating several scoring quality scoring opportunities, but none better than the one it had in the 38th minute. Senior Katie Schwartz took a corner kick for the Owls that found the head of sophomore Kelsey Barr on the far post, but her header attempt bounced just wide the keep the game scoreless.

Just when the Black and Gold thought they had all the momentum Samford scored two goals late in the first half to make the score 2-0 at halftime. Katie Proud scored in the 40th minute, and Adrianne Mancino put one home in the 44th minute.

Kennesaw State got back in the game in the 55th minute as redshirt-freshman Katrina Frost capitalized on a free kick opportunity. Frost stepped up and crushed a shot from just outside the box that crept just inside the near post to make the score 2-1.

Frost has now scored four goals in her first five games in a KSU uniform.

However, the Bulldogs found the back of the net again in the 65th minute to make the score 3-1 and ultimately put the game out of reach.

“Overall, I think it was a pretty evenly matched game,” head coach Rob King said. “We dominated in the shot count and created some pretty good chances, but we just couldn’t stick the ball away. We let up some soft goals tonight which took the wind out of our sails a little bit. We fought to get the game back to 2-1, but they just scored at the right times and finished the game off.”

The Owls outshot the Bulldogs, 15-11, while Samford held the edge in corner kicks, 8-3.

Redshirt-freshman Emily Cox made her first collegiate start in goal for KSU and made three saves in the losing effort.

Kennesaw State has less than a 24-hour turnaround as they come right back and host Clayton State on Saturday at 6 p.m. at KSU Soccer Stadium.
